Visiting southerners—at least those from 1 cxiia—are not at all pleased with the rush of northern railroads, if we may : ve Maj. Martin, of 1 t state. They are used to a very different sort of dre iiurs. By way of illustration the.major

tells this story:

I rm-.cmber that a woman one evening asked the conductor of a train in my Utc to stay at a certain place ail night. She wanted to spend lhe night with some friends, she Raid, and if he didn’t oblige her she should have to wait twen

j ty-fonr hours for a train.

The conductor said he hated to be disj obliging to n lady, bat lie didn’t like to' delay the other passenger.:. Finally he agreed to talk it over with them, and we decided that if her friends would give us lodging and breakfast we wouldn't mind an extra day spent on

, the way.

The train waited half air hour while she got off and consulted with her friends, and just as we were about to leave the place she came and told us that they had agreed to the term*, The iires in the engine were banked, and the train left on the track. Next moriring. after a comfortable night spent in the farm house, we left the place twelve hours lute. Talk aliout accommodating railroads’—New York Tribune. Room for Snuptalon. The Rev. Two of Hi* Plerrepout*. One of the best known men In yachting circles is John .lay Pierrepont, of Brook lyn. For years he has been a familiar face of yachting events on yachtboard and on cruises, yet although a wealthy man he has never owned or chartered a yacht until this year, ami it was only at the July meeting that he was elected a member of the New York Yacht club. But while he did not have a yacht of his own, lie was always a welcome guest on the yachts of his friends, of whom he has a host. This fact probably had something to do with his non-appearance for so long in t-ho list of yacht owners. Besides his brother-in-law, Rutherford Stuyvcsant, of this city, has for years owned one of the finest and most luxurious appointed sailing yachts in this country, the schooner Palmer. A good story is told of Mr. Pierrepont’s grandfather, Hczekiah Pierrepont, who came to this city from New England somewhere about the beginning of the present century. He brought a letter of introduo tion to William Constable, one of the lending merchants of the day, who after reading it said to himsomewhat gruflly,“'VVhat do you joting men keep coming here from New England for?” "To make business, marry your daughters and wind up your estates.” promptly replmd the young New Englander. The retort so pleased the old merchant that he took the young man to hi., home and introduced him to Lis family. And tiie young man made good his saying by marrying the old man’s daughter and winding up his estate. The old Constable residence stood at the corner of Wall and William streets, on the site now occupied by the Bank of New York.—New Y'ork Times.

Information at Once. A few days ago an employe of the New York, New Haven and Hartford railroad shops waa standing at the side of the shop facing on the tracks when he espied a well dressed, nice appearing man walking from the south, and evidently counting ties through lack of funds. Thinking that the man must have been to the races and become broke he determined to have some fun with him. When the traveler reached anoint nearly opposite to him ho Lnsinuut ingly called to him, and asked if he was busted. His solicitude awakened a responsive chord in the pedestrian's heart, and he answered hack that he would come aver and explain. He came, and in about two minutes after his arrival he had the shop man so completely whipped that no other explanation was necessary. Then muttering about carefulness of speech he left his vie(Mil thoroughly satisfied in every respect, and proceeded on his \v«ty.—Hartford Courant. Naval Training Scbnsl.
