SAUCE FOR THE CANVASSThe only way to prevent Old Sandy of the Star I’ress trom breaking into the County Treasury is to send her out to “Mubbiu Ltidie . ” If Farmer Dunbar with his usual skill will insert a few' wolverine rings iu her snout, the rooting will cease. The farmers in this county have it now in their power to bo properly represented in the next legislature. They have before them a law-clerk, a (ledgling, who never c'd a day's labor in his life, whose * / recognition by the Democratic Vty has been brought about by tiis father's wealth, and an intelligent, brave, kind-hearted tiller of the soil; a self-made man whose clear head, brave heart and strong right arm stamp him one of nature's noblemen. The issue is: Ader with his record of extravagance in the last legislature or honest Aleck Hreckinridge whose callous palms attest the sincerity of his professions. Farmers, put up or shut up! i Ader, in his Belle Union speech, the | hall having been granted him through | the courtesy of the F. M. li. A., insulted them by declaring that the , farmers in the last legislature by reason j of a lack of common sense w r ere recki lessly extravagant, lie said Mr. Itrecki inridge might do to raise pigs and ' ducks and geese, but that he yas untit j to represent the county in the IcgisJa i ture. It required a thinking man.

WHEN MY DREAM COMES ON.

Oh, when my dream comes cm I hear Voices of master singers fill The hollow heareti ar}i iood the sphere. And hold the wild sea still. Some spotless hero riding down. To do or die at battle dawn. Clothes me in honor and renown I*ike Bayard's, when my dream cornea on. My dream comes on. and lo! th*‘ scope Of life expands and brims all space With truth, with freedom's hope. And measureless sweetness of God's grace; All hate goes out, all love comes in. All cowardice and fear are gone; There is no room for fault or sin. Or sorrow, when my dream comes on. My dream comes on and fills my soul With visions like the sky and sea; Aloft, on highest heights, the goal Is set to mark my destiny. My destiny is freedom's own. My life to ampler life is drawn. To love's ideal stature grown I triumph, when my dream comes oil My dresfm comes on; ah. let me dream. Let no rude sound my vision break, Until tho morn begins to gleam. And all the future’s song birds wake; For I am happy while I keep This sense of lapsing into dawn On some sweet current, swift and deep And odorous, when my dream comes onl —Maurice Thompson iu Pittsburg Bulletin.

THIUSDAY,

OCT. 30. 1800.

The '‘combine'’ to put up goods for political purposes has already become bankrupt.

Tax-paying time is a forcible re minder of the necessity for a change in the administration of county affairs.

Every workingman should remember that under the new law he has four hours to go to the polls and vote and return to his work.

No person loses his vote at the approaching election because of his tailnre to register under the provisions of the new law. The section requiring voters to register or to exhibit a tax receipt. und*>r certain conditions. has been declared unconstitutional. No doubt the fact that Indiana is under the reign of the worst form of bourbonism, has much to do with the poor showing the State makes under the vensi s of 1890. While Ohio shows a gain of 14.(>5 per cent.; Michigan, of per cent.; lowe, of 17.3G per cent., and Illinois of 24.06 per cent, Indiana's gain is 10.65 per OJUt.

Why It la Twelfth Day. . Tradition says that tho twelfth day from Christmas day was remarkat Vt for having been that upon which the visit of tho Magi took place, upon ' \ich Christ was baptized, tho water at Cana turned into wine and tho five thousand fed. For 300 years it was kept by e:vstem Christians as the day upon which Christ was t*>ni, and among ourselves it was long observed with great festivities. We are told that in tho reign of King Alfred a law was passed “by virtue of which the twelve days after tho nativity of our Saviour were made festivals.” The last day was accounted the greatest of tho twelve, and especially given up to "Christmas gambols” and tho visiting of friends. Tho custom seems long to have continued in force, for in the Sixteenth century Twelfth day seems to have been kept with as much zeal as Christmas. The roval family at court led the way, the universities and the inns of court following them in tho extent of their festivities. At tho temple the whole twelvo days were kept with great care, and many of the country gentlemen followed the same custom. In some parts of England the very poorest people contrived to keep the twelve days with such good cheer for themselves and their neighbors as their means would allow. —Exchange. A Ruasiau k-gvnd relatee that when St Joseph returned from hi* flight into Egypt he found his shoes in great want of repair, and being aware of theexoellenee of leather work tn Kussin sent them to Kieff to be mended, where they remained. It Is now reported from Kieff ihm the archbishop of St. Sophia proposes to resole the shoes and then “expose them to the veneration of the faithful”
