M' hiLE, Ala., Oct. C7.—A fire began about 12:40 o’cock yesterday afternoon and resulted in the most disastrous confingrati n that ’ v 'ol ile has had since the war. The fire began in a shingle mill and factory near the river front just outside the northern boundary of the city limits. A strong wind tr m the northeast, perhaps a twenty-mile breeze was blowing, and the dames soon communicated to the cotton warehouses which line the river trout from I Beauregard street, the northern boun- . dary, southward, six blocks, and from the river front westward, to Magnolia j

street, three blocks.

From the shingle mill to Goodman's 1 ware house on the block bounded 1>y . Beauregard, Water and Lipecomn streets the distance is about six hundred yards and almost as soon as smoke was seen issuing troiu the roof, the cotton blu/ed up. in Goodman’s thore was stored about I'OO bales of cotton and the sparks from this cotton carried by the wind next communicated the flames to Brown avenue, running back to Magnolia street to the fioutnwest to the Mobile oil nulls, which was next south on the east side i f front street, and to the wharf front of tlie Mobile and Birmingham Railroad company, which fronted on the wider from Beauregard to Lipscomb

A Crochet Need?© in Her ttreaHt. A strange unit probably fatal accident occurred to t.ie little 5-ycar old daughter of Mr. John Burns, a well known citizen of Manchester. Tho little girl, partially disrobed to be put to bod for the night, vvioi watching some member of the family overhauling the contents of a bureau drawer, and picked up from it an old fashioned, small, steel crochet needle. She was playing with the little implement unobserved, when she suddenly cried out that it -s-a* sticking her. An examination was made, mid it was soon discovered that the needle hod almost disappeared in her breast, only a portion of the hooked end being visible. An attempt was made, but unsuccMafully, to withdraw it, and then Dr. John F. B. Weaver was hastily summoned. Before his arrival, however, the ueodle had entirely disappeared from sight, and he was unable to locate it by probing. Internal hemorrhage and expectoration of blood ensued, and every attempt of the child to take anything, even water, is followed by vomiting. Dr. Weaver thinks the needle must have grazed :i*<t slightly injured the lieart and also penetrated the lung. The little girl is in a very critical condition.— Cor. Baltimore American.
