AFTERNOON REPORT. More Volunteers to be called for Lake Defences An important prophecy A recess of Congress proposed Later from Europe Arrival of the Scieta Governor Saxton shipwrecked. Wasaikgton, May 20. A call ii sooq to be made on the States for additional volunteers to the number of at least 100,000. Careful inquiry has elicited the fact that our army is entailer than baa been represented, even in official accounts, numbering; not quite 500,000 effective men. This fresh force is to be used as a reserve, to be sta tioned at convenient gancies. points to meet entertimes dispatch. TFashtsgton, May 20. The subject of lake defence aad lake commerce was very forcibly and fully presented this morning at a meeting of the New York delegation in Congress, by the Hon. Samuel B. Ruggles, who appeared in behalf the State. The principal topics discussed were the present undefended condition of (he lakes, and the great extent and the rapid growth 'of the commerce on their waters. Alsj the vital importance of the cereal products of the States surrounding the lakes in furnishing the elements of foreign commerce, and consequently in swelling the amount of duties on imports to be received in exchange. The two cardinal measures growing out of these discussions, and which must occupy the attention ot Congress, will be the opening of adequate channels from the eastern a:. d western eitrt milies of i be lakes, first to bo effected by enlarging the locks on the Erie k Oswego Canal, and by enlarging the CBtial from Chicago to the Illinois River. 1' is hoped that tbesi two gnat measures vi i;l unite the integral portions of our barnmnious system, rxtending from the Hud Sun and the Mississippi, permitting the pasfnge throuchout the line of mail clad vessels sufficient lor the dttVnce cf these great waters. Voluminous dispatches are received from the guTT tod iy. They relate principally to the details of the recent movements counected with the capture of New Oiltans. The vefsels of the fleet have Iteen judiciously distributed under commander Lee, going up as far as Vicksbnrg fir purposes which it would be improper to state.
