THE DECATUR DEMOCRAT ' t l ■ ■ BY A. J. BILL. \ Friday, June i 5, 1883. — e=g= — In view of what Gov. Butler has done for Massachusetts it might be well for the other New England state* to elect a democratic governor. They may all of them have more “Tewksberry” about them than they are willing to acknowledge. Giorgi W. Julian, in the North American Review, charges that Carl Bohuri, after helping rob Tilden of the presidency, by virtue of his office as Secretary of the Interior conveyed lands to railroad companies that did not belong to them, thus robbing the people. Mt. Julian makes a very black case against the Secretary. Local elections in Virginia two weeks ago indicate that Mahone has has lost his grip upon Virginia politics. The consort of republicans and repudiationists would have never been entered into, but that a desperate cause required a desperate remedy. And now the Mahoneing business will be off the country over. Arthur will not be “for us" any longer. Dorsey says that the rupture between Conkling and Garfield could be easily explained. All that would be required would be the publication of a paptr which he styles as an agreement between New York politicians and Garfield. Dorsey intimates that that paper would prove Conkling the martyr. This indicates a wonderful amount of latent harmony in the Republican party. It consists of stalwart and half breed presisting in taking each others scalps. Harvaiu College has made it a custom to confer the degree of L. L. D. upon the governors of Massachusetts. Harvard also makes a practice of eonfering degree honor! upon presidents. Sometime since they so honored one R. B. Hayes. Last week they refused to so honor Gov. Butler. The trouble is the Gov. beat Harvard’s men for the position, and as there was no 8 to 7 game played, their men still remains beaten. It is as contemptible a a specimen of malice as ever was exhibited. Elecanee and Purity. Ladies who appreciate elegance and purity are using Packer’s Hair Balsam. It is the best article sold for restoring gray hair to its original color, beauty and lustre.
PLEASANT MILLS ITEMS, BY NORRIS HOMO. Farmers as a general thing in this locality are done planting corn. The pied frog’s orchestra is sgain l 0 heard in the land. Mr. John Armstrong and lady, of Berne, Ind., were visiting with friends in the city the past week. John reports everything all lively and prospering at Berne. Some of our energetic young men attended the commenoement exercises at Decatur the Sth inst. reporting a general good time and everything done in good order, which speaks well for instructor as well as graduates. Samuel Steele who sometime since purchased the Joseph Winans farm, is greatly improving the looks of the house by putting on another story. Mr. Steele is one of those men that never leaves anything undone which should be done. The people in this locality are very much elated over the selection of the trustees as regarding County Superintendent. The Monmouth base ball nine met the first nine in the diamond field at this place on last Saturday, but owing to a little controversy the game was not finished. The score stood when stopped 8 to 4 tn favor of the Monmouths. Mrs. Rhoda Harb, of Willshire, 0., was the guest of Dr. J. T. Harper and lady on last Wednesday. - • Jesse Billman buys his coffee by the sack, sugar by the barrel, flour by the too, cordial by the gallon, and when asked the reason why ? Answers, it is a boy and weighs 11 lbs. Who is it in Pleasant Mills that is ao lately from California? Wilson Watson returned home on a visit From lowa, where he has been residing for the past year. Prof. Kirby closed a successful term of school in this place Isjgt week. The next term will open about the middle of August. Timely notice will be given through the columns of this paper.
Mrs. Rosa Merries departed this life Monday morning, June 11th, after a lingering illness of nearly six months; funeral services Tuesday, conducted by Rev. D. B. Reckanl. A team of horses belonging to Adam Alguire made a lively run away on last Saturday, but luckily no one hurt. John Fredline takes charge of the flouring mil) at this place this week, j We bespeak for him a liberal patron-, *g e - Our blacksmith shop now under the auspices of a Mr. Heckman, is doing a good business. John knows how to tack on a shoe as good as the best. We judge from the amount of cigar boxes lying around the doctors office that he is going into the cigar business. How is it Doc?
The C. & A. R. RThis road is ndw thoroughly completed from Chicago to New York, and is as near an air line as practicable. There arc but few cufies in the road, the grades are easy, the ties of oak, the rails of excellent-steele, the cars are all new and furnished with all modern improvements. There are now two passenger trains daily each way from Decatur, as follows: Going ease 7:12 a. m and 3:20 p. m. Going west, 2:06 p. m. and 8:42 p. m.. There is also a local freight train carrying passengers; going east at 7:30 a. m. and West at 4:45 p. m. The Chicago and Atlantic R. R. is certainly an exeellen t one under good officers, and having competent men in its employ. Col. J. C. Smith, of Chicago, is the general manager, and J. H. Tinney, Superintendent of the Eastern Division, Huntington. Mr. C. L. Thomas is the efficient agent of the road in Decatur. On Monday, June 4th, a new time table went into effect. There are now twelve trains daily through Decatur. The road lias'already taken its place among the leading roads 6>f the country, and will certainly secure a competent share of public patronage. Decatur is fortunate in its railroad facilities and connections. It has three railroads: The Grand Rapids and Indiana; the Toledo, Cincinnati & St.Louis; and last, but hot least, the Chi cago & Atlantic. There are about' forty trains a day passing through our city, and the whistle of the locomotive and the rumbling of the trains are sounds which never cease One thing we mention, which is that tickets for any part of the country at the best rates are on sal c at the depot of the C. & A. railroad, Decatur, and baggage can be checked anywhere. Robert Mtloney, of Avilla, wa* visiting our Bob, the Marshal, this week. The senior Maloney is a pronounced Democrat of the old school. The Root township boys and Pleasant Mills base ballista had—or rather intended to have a game Saturday. Two innings were played, whten Pleasant Mills kicked against a decision of the umpire, John Walters, which ended the game. Better hare played it out boys. Tn Democrat has appointed H. A. Fristoe its agent for the purpose of settling old'subscriptions and rolioiting new subscribers. He will, for that purpose, make a complete canvass of the county. We bespeak for him a cordial reception from our friends, and auy considerations accorded him as a personal favor. A. J. Hill, Manager. There is, since the last issue of the Journal, a new classification of society been going on in this place. It is a scratch if you find any one who acknowledges himself as belonging to the class known as : our most respected citiaens.' and especially those who profess personal disgust of the " way . such ranches are conducted.
