They need arms, but he represents that they areboundto succeed whether aided by foreign intervention The Maine Senate voted, nearly three to one, to abolish capital punishment, and it stands a fair chance to pass the House. The old usury laws will be repealed. Numerous outrages on the Chinese, in San Francisco, are report ed. Last week the police dispersed a large mob, and injured several persons in attempting to rescue a party of Chinese from danger. The Board of Supervisors of the county of Milwaukee have tendered the new Court House,-wich is t<> cost nearly a million dollars, to the State fora Capital House, pro vidcd the Capital is moved to Mil waukee. The revolution in Mexico proves to lie formidable. The Govern ment troops, at last accounts were compelled to fall back, the officersin command deeming it unwise to to risk a general battle. There was another glorious rain in California last week, making a total of fifteen and a half inches for the season. Abundant cropare almost certain, and the people of the Southern portion of the State are jubilant orer the improv ed prospects. The Missouri Senate, by a vote of twenty five to five, paseed a res elution favoring the submission t<> the people of the proposal to alml iah the disfranchising clause in the constitution. It is stated that the Erie Railway Comfiany have offered $600,000 for the ground on which the Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary stands, on Ninth avenue New York, with the view to erect • monster railroad depot on the property. Temperance in Jay County. This vexed question of temper ance in Jay county has been a source of much annoyance to us We have made two different statements in regard to the matter. First, that there were no persons licensed to sell whisky in Jay county; and that none was drank there. Second.’that there are persons even in Jay county licensed to sell that vile abomination called whisky. and tha’ they do drink it over there—over there. Now we will say to our readers that both of these statements were published on the strength of Bro Jones’ statements in the Jay’ and Adams Republican. which we thought reliable. Great, therefore, was our astonishment on opening his issue of February 24th to find the following: -It would proba bTy hurt Bro. Hill's feelings to say that the above is a lie. We will temper our remarks with charity and say he is willfully mixtaken." Now. Bro. Jones, do we understand you that both of our statements are willful mistakes; or, is one a mistake; it so, which one'? If you have deceived us. and cans ed us to make wrong statements, we wish to have them corrected Almost every person chooses a model, real or imaginary, as a guide to their actions. Bro Jones, some time since, we took yon for our model of truth, and have tried faithfully to live up to your standard, as we saw it. If the result is displeasing to you, we are ven sorry indeed; for whatever willful ■nistateinents we have made arc the result of the example you have unconsciously set before us. We are inclined to think that you are right, that we are “willfully mixtaken." ■ 1 “Loyalty Rewarded.” Our model President has just appointed Samuel Bard, of Mein phis. Governor of Idaho. At the commencement of the rebellion. Burd was foremost in plotting treason, foremost in counselling apposition to the Government, foremost in demanding that Mem phis should he made the Thermopylae of the war, foremost to run away when danger drew nigh. Like Job’s war horse, he -‘snuffed the battle from afar.” He held a civil office under the confederacy ‘luring the entire war. purposely to keep out of danger, and was one of the most notorious men of the time in his abuse of Yankees, and in shouting on the war. After the surrender, the same tongue that defamed the federal cause was turned upon his confeder ites in treason. jle was baptized pi the filthy pool of radicalism, published a paper at Atlanta. Su satisfactory to the Radical recon•‘tructionists. of which Grant is the leader, that he has la-en taken into the Magdalena establishment prepa ed for broken down traitors and made Governor of Idaho. The former exculpates all government officials but Butter field, And recommends remedial legislation. The minority report claims that the investigation did not go far enough, espicially in the direction of the white house. That ; investigation was intended to cover up whatever interest the white house officials had in putting up gold, as every body is aware: if not w.i.v was not the evidence ot Mrs. Grant and other sattelites of the economical President examin ed. A majority of a special committee ot the House of .Representatives of that State have reported in favor of a license law. The law has had an unfavorable effect n|»on the morals of the pe<> pie ; and the advocates of moral suasion feel that the cause of temperance is being retarded by the operation of the present prohib itory law.
