Farewell Life Umy senses swim ; And the world is growing dim; Thronging shadows cloud the light. What a clear, vivid, lifelike picture that name recalls to me; and yet I know I can not reproduce’ it for your, benefit, reader, for you never saw him, never knew him, and, above all, he was not your uncle! To me, as a child, he seemed the wisest, handsomest, and greatest of men; and yet he. was only the son of a farmer, who was the son of a far mer; and so on, I doubt not, might his ancestors have been re- • corded back to the time when the memory of man runneth not to the contrary. Very wise he cculd not have been,“for he and his only brother » performed the farm labor of a hundred acres : and yet be did find time each week to read both a political and literary newspaper, and manage his affairs so well that he never-lacked the means of obtaining now and then a new book—a hlxury rare in the home? of most ! of our neighbors of much larger' means. Handsome, I am sure even now ( that he was. Like David of old. , “be was ruddy and of a fair conn tenance " Os fine manly proportions, nearly six feet in heigt, with thick, curling, auburn hair and beard : he had a clear, honest, fear i less blue eys. was always quick tp flash and kindle with delight, or grow moist and tender with! deep feeling. Great I know he whs not, save in the sense of having great undeveloped, or only ‘half developed, powers, which lie himself never knew, and of which he had scarcely draamed. He was not even so j great pliysicially as iny childish fancy made him, when no feat of, giant in nursery story seemed to me so astounding as the one per ' formed before my very eyes when, standing upon the floor of our low ceiled sitting-room, he touched the old beams overhead with his hand. Ah ! he can never be to me like other mon now ; nor would I destroy the illusion if I could, and make him as the men that cross my daily path.—Pii<ebe Cakry in H'.ir- ’ per s Magazine. IThc following little pleasantry occurred in New Albany on Fri- ’ day night. A man named Rich- I ard Burke was sitting near one of the windows of bis house reading the Bible, the curtain of the window being elevated so that he could be plainly seen from the outside, w hen a woman’approached near to the window, and, holding a revolver almost against the glass, snapped it twice in an effort I to slioqt Mr. Burke. The dick of the pistol was distinctly heard, 'and Mr. Burke very suddenly and unceremoniously vacated his seat for a safer position in the room. Burke knows the woman, but L won’t prosecute. || I Neither the Rev. Henry Ward I Beecher nor Rev. O. IJ. Frothing- ■ ham has reported to the pro|M*r ofI fleer the marriage of Mr Albei tD. I Richardson and Mrs. Abby McI Farland. The State law provides I that a report shall be made within I a month after a marriage, and iinI pose upon the clergyman who neg I lects to make the report a forfeit I of fifty dollars. | ’Somebody says Butler is the I “Titan of the llonse.” We sop I pose either Chandler of Saul.-bury I is the tight'mi of the Senile — ■ Jsvwill (.ourur.
