Almost a Fire.—The spoke factory of H. W. Shackley caught fire on Monday night, from a stove in the second story. A hole was burned in the floor, some two feet long and a foot and a half wide, in which condition it was discovered in the morning, and extinguished. The fine dust thatgath ers in the belting room, which was nearly two inches deep, probablykept the fire from bursting into a flame. On the floor underneath the fire there was a large amount of shavings from the spoke lathe, but strange to say they- did not take fire from the fal’ing cinders. Had the fire burst into aflame it is altogether probable the spoke factory and wagon shop adjoining would have been destroyed. It would have been one of the most disastrous-fires that has ever oc curred at this place, but providentially the destroying element was kept within bounds. Temperance in Jay County. The Jay Republican, in last week's i sue. devotes about a col timn in reply to a paragraph in the Eagle of the previous week, in relation to A. M. Tempter's application for a retailer’s license in that county. lie asks us why we ■find fault? that they have done nothing but what the law authorizes for protection against whiskysellers and their debaucheries ' Jones has a happy faculty of leaving the main question and running“off upon some other, in a discussion. There is not a drop of whisky to be purchased as a beverage in Jay county, legally, because no one is licensed to sell. Now we are bold to assert that those who desire a dram can get it. in any town in Jay comity, in quan tities to suit. The Republican says if Bro. Hill lias any knowledge of persons carrying on this illegal traffic, let him inform the Grand Jury <»f Jav county We nre not in that business, friend Jones, but from your earnest pre* tensions (?) we suppose.] you were hence we will point out a few witnesses that you cause (hcin<l an earnest temperance man) to be brought before the aforesaid jury: That school boy who had the delirium tremens; those parties that the local of the Republican reports drunk on the streets of Portland. If you succeed in the cases we suggest. we will try and help you further in the “march of Progress."— If you fail to tin something, we , shall conclude you nre an old | cheat, and are afraid to act lest you might interfere with the monopoly of some “loyal” brother Radical in the sale of whisky in your town; illegally, of course. And while you pretend to tight hard against the traffic, secretly countenance it for the sake of “peace in the family." Excuse this plain talk, Bro. Jones; it is necessary, sometimes, you know, among friends. Adams C ounty Teucliers’ <■- sot-lotion.
