The Eagle. FRIDAY DEC. 04. IS«9. Local & Miscellaneous. New Ad vert Hem ent g. Notice of Administrator—Filling. Attorjey at Law —France. New Drug Store—Schrock & Blossom. XirWe nre under obligations to Jo. Bramerkemp for files of San Francisco papers of a late date. Th at interesting document, the “delinquent list,” will make its appearance nfext week. JSFIn another place we publish the Bluffton Banner's account of the “Highway Robbery” that ap peared in our last. J3T Live hogs have been selling for 89 50 in this market this week, and is a liberal price. Dio ! vers will have but a small margin for their trouble at these figures. Business Is brightening up a litUe this week, as compared with last. We can stand a considerable more brightening without seriously feeling the pressure. J3T The saloon keepers started out on Monday to •'drink up all the whisky in town. After calling in considerable help- the attempt proved a failure. We offer the Eagle free to any person sending us the names of five subscribers, accompanied with the requisite amount of cash, $7.50. /3F“The Indianapolis Sentinel has donned a dress, and under the present management is a paper that the Democracy of the State may well feel proud of. It is a live paper, as to polities, news and the markets. In making up your list of papers for the year, do not forget to include the Sentinel. It will be indispensable to every Democrat, who desires to be post ed in regard tathe coming campaign. Another Offer.—For two dollars, cash in advance, we will fur nish the Eagle. Woods’ Household Magazine and the American Stock Journal. Tbe Household Magazine is the best dollar magazine that we know of. A cop}' can be seen at this office. New Shaving Shop.--A new shaving shop, composed of an en- . tire new firm, has opened an office this week on Front street. We allude to the firm of Dent <fc‘Magner. Shavings delivered to any part of the town without delay.— Orders solicited. Services at M. E. Church.— There will be services at the Methodist church A. M., Christmas morning, at 10| o'clock, and at night. Sunday morning there will be a sermon for the benefit of the Sabbath School scholars. Parents are requested to at tend with thoifaehildren. • Teachers’ Institute. —We see the Examiner has circulated the programme for the Institute. He informs us that the Trustees of the M. E. Church have, at this late day, refused to. endorse the action of the President, Rev. Mr. Wilkinson, and D. Reider. Trustee. Another room will be secured and timely notice given. Going to Try Again —Washington township, Randolph county, voted against the railroad tax to buy the iron to build the Cincinnati, Richmond and Fort Wavne railroad through that township. The Winchester Journal says it is now believed that the people nre willing to vote the tax, and it is probable that another election will be ordered. Petit Jury—A venire has been issued summoning the following named persons to serve as petit jurors for the January term, 1870, of the Court of Common Pleas: James Johnston. Ernst B dtineyer, J. H. Barr, Justin Mann, C. M. Brake, John II. J. Ruckloss. Joseph A. J. Teeple. Jeremiah Archjiold. F. J. Bohneeht and Stephen McKale.* — —■ Sensible to the Last —After viewing the meteor of the 28th of October. ’69. Already had the moon spread her mantle of mellow silver/ light upon the face of
things, and the whole family of stars were mingling their radiance in the great ocean of splendor.— Our hero arose from his couch, shook the dew drops from his gray locks, and straightway wended his way to the Drug Store of Dorwin <fc Bro., purchased a lot of Dr. J. B. Townsend’s Headache and Blood Purifxiiyg Pills, Worm Loz enges. and Magic Oil, for his whole family. They excel all others. Old Paper—Mr. Thomas Culberston, who resides a short distance from this place, left at our office an old paper, that from its age is a valuable curiosity of the newspaper literature of “lang syne.” It is a copy of “The New England Cottrnnf,” being number eighty of that paper, published February 11,1723. The announcement is: “Printed and sold ly Benjamin Franklin, in Queen street, where advertisements are taken in.” It contains an editorial in regard to the object and de-! sign of the publisher in conducting the Courant; his Majesty's most gracious speech to both houses of Parliament, October 11, 1722; London news down to October 31st. Under the Boston news we find that Mr. Orum, minister of the Episcopal church, Bristol, came from thence with a petition from twelve of his hearers, who are imprisoned for refusing to pay rates to the Presbyterian minister of Bristol, to the Lieut. Governor, who promised to use his influence with the General Assembly to have the law under . which they are imprisoned repealed. It reports an expedition 200 , strong after Indians, under Capt. Harmon, in the neighborhood of Norigiwock. It contains but three . advertisements. A Mr. William Chuk, in Merchants row, has “Town bonlted flower” for sale, at 28 shillings per hundred. A servant boy’s time foi; four years to be disposed of. IJe is sixteen years of ago and can keep accounts'— Ben Franklin recommends his paper as an advertising medium as follows: “This paper having met with so general an acceptance in Town and Country, as to require a far greater Number of them to Ibe printed, than there is ot other public pa|Kfis; and it being besides more generally read by a vast Number of Borrowers, who do not take it in, the Publisher thinks proper to give this publick Notice for the I neon ragemen t of those who’ would have Advertisements inserted in the public Prints, which | they may have printed in this Paper at a moderate Price.” We hardly know whether Ben made the announcements to encourage advertisers, or gave it as a broad 1 hint to borrowers to suhscrilie.— Probably both, as he always had , an eye single to business in its broadest sense., Drmocratic County Convention. Pursuant to call of the Central > Committee, the Democracy of Ad- ; ams county met at the Court j House, in Decatur. Saturday, Det comber 18, at 1 o'clock P. M — i ( The Convention was called to or- > derby J. R. Bobo, Chai rmitn of the Central Committee, who briefly stated the objec. of the meeting. On motion of Seymour Worden. [Judge Studabaker was appointed | Chairman ; and on motion of Geo. Lucky, A. J. Hill was selected as Secretary. Jfldge Stutl.abaker, on taking his i seat, remaned that the harmony and good will that had always •i maintained in the Democratic organization of this county had con tributed to its success, and to the gradual ami yearly increased Dein- . ocratic majorities in the county.— If Democrats throughout the State 1 did their whole duty, the meagre I majority of the Radicals at the last election would be swept away next fall. With a proper effort -i Indiana could be redeemed, and Adams county would do her part ■ Seymour Worden moved a committee of three be appointed, to select delegates to attend the State i Convention; carried. The Chairman thereupon appointed the fol l lowing committee : Seymour Wor den. George Frank and M. FBiirkhead. - James R B >bo moved that the Ch** rman m»i*«»il>t a Central mittec, consisting of seven per-
sons, which carried, and the following committee appointed:— 1 Janies R. Bobo, Wm. G. Spencer, « Jesse Niblick, James Stoops, Jr, j Bazzle Hendricks, Lewis Mattox $ and David Aber. f The committee to select dele f gates and alternates reported the j following names: David Studaba , ker, J. R. Bobo, A. J. Hill, George c Lucky, P. N. Collins, Justus Kel- I ly, Jacob Sarff, John Rupright and 1 David Aber. As alternates the 1 * following: John McConnell, Hen I ry McLean, John Christen, Rich * ad Winn, Robert iSmisson David Erwin, Lewj.i Mattox, Con rad R’nkiug and John J. Chid b. After a few remarks by Bob . ii regard to the nomination of Township officers at the primary , election, Sam. C. Bollman move I : that the Convention instruct the Central Committee to urge upon the different townships the necessity of nominating Township offi- ; c rs at the same time and in t’ e ■ same manner as County officers; carried Jas. R. Bobo moved that the proceedings bo published in the Decatur Eagle —carried. Adjourned. - D. Studabaker, Ch’n. A. J. Hill, Sec’y. Disgraceful Row. — On last Friday evening. Dr. J. A. Estill, of Willshire, 0 , who had been visiting at Murray, stopped on his way toward home at the Burns’ Saloon, in this place, where he treated a few friends. About! dusk he started toward Newville ; in his buggy, but before getting i more than a mile on the wav was ! rudely overhauled by Frank Burns and Ben. Studabaker. Burns claimed that Estill owed 80 cents to the saloon, and drawing a revolver, told him he must return and settle it Estill bad no recollection of i the debt, but in the face of a superior force with a pistol leveled at his head, he conclmled to return On arriving in front of the saloon, another Burns—Henry C —sprang into the buggy mid commenced striking him in the face. He was finally dragged from his buggy by the hair of the head, kicked and otherwise maltreated by the Burns ' es, and then forced into the saloon. | where they said “they would either! choke it out or pound it out of him.” he ] r 'testing that bo did not) owe them anything. A friend ! finally paid the 80 cents, and Estill was released. Henry C. Burns was at once put on trial for assault and battery before Justice Eaton. Plea of guilty entered. The State demanded a jury of twelve men, which was im I a meled. Evidence was heard and jury re ired at 12| o’clock at night. V rdict returned at 3 o clock Sa unlay morning, finding defendant guilty and that a fine of 825 would not he sufficient punishment. He was accordingly bound ! over to the Court of Comm n | Pleas in the sum of 3200. Frank Burns was next arraign led Jury trial, occupying till near midnight. Verdict of guilty an I fined 88 25, The fine aml<u»sts amounted to about 830 —paid. Thus rests the ease for the present —all about 80 cents, which the assaulted party says he did not | owe, or f he did, the bill was run i i up by a thirsty stool-pigeon on his account without his knowledge. Estill's injuries are not serious, ■ : i yet that is no palliation of the law | less ami biutal manner in which i he was treated. — Bluffton Banner, i Ckicugo MurkctN. Chicago. Dec. 22.
