-—f" -= The report that Ben. Butler had the hog cholera ia denied. The other hogs in Massachusetts are incensed that such a report circulated. When Haddock’s wife kickeT him out of bed he said, “Look here, now, if you do that again it will be likely to cause 8 coldness in this family.’’ A correspondent of the Bridgeport Farmer “took tea’’ with a Mormon elder at Salt Lake City the other day, at which six wives “presided,” and twenty-seven ' children sat around the table. Mrs. Eva Lancaster, of Navaso ) ta, Texas, is now running three institutions’ herself the Navasota "Hanger (newspaper) a millinery shop, and a cradle with a fresh incumbent. “My dear,” asked a husband, on observing new striped hose on his only heir, “why have you made barber’s poles of our Ernest's legs ?’ “Because he’s a little shaver,’ was the reply. ‘-You have lost some of your friends, I see,” said a traveler to a negro whom he had met on the road. “Yes, massa.” “Was it a near or distant relative?” “Well, party distant, ’bout thirty-four miles.” “I think I have seen you before, sir,” said one gentleman to anotb- I er. “Are you not Owen Smith?” ( “O, yes,” said the other, ~l'm owin’Smith, and owin’ Jones, and owin’ Brown, and owin’ every body.” A Boston philanthropist, visit- ' ing the States prison, remarked to a prisoner, “Most of your friends j think your sentence was excessive; nothing like it was ever known.” ; “Yes, I suppose so,” was the pris- j oner’s reply; “but then, you know, i every thing has gone up since the war.” Do not be troubled because you . have no great virtues. God made I a million spires of grass where he l made one tree. The earth is fringed and carpeted, not with forests, ' but grass. Only have enough of little virtues and common fidelities, and you need not mourn because you are neither a saint nor a hero. A Western editor relates that he once stopped at a restaurant in ■ Washington, and, ncticing that i the waiter was uncommonly sober.*) asked him if he was sick. ‘Yes’ very curtly,‘l is.’ Washin’ton’stW wus place ever I see. When it’s dry you can’t see where you’re gwine, and when it's wet you can’t go!’ — o— —- Judge Kingsbury, of Portland, 1 Maine, while traveling in Califor- ’ nia, wanted to buy a couple of newspapers, and asked the newsboy the price. “Two bits,” said the boy. The Judge pulled out a twenty five cent stamp and handed it to him. The boy looked at it • curiously for a moment, turned it | over and said, “What’s that ?" “Money,” said the Judge; “twen ' tv five cents.” The bov 3iin<i out to several others of his fraternity. "I say, fellows, come and see what the people East use for money.” The boys gathered round and-dis- j cussed it, and the Judge was hoping that the boy would not take it, when the newsboy turned to him and said. “Well, I guess I’ll keep this. It'll do to give to some of; my poor relations.” Keeping Cider. — Editor Cincinnati Gazette:— Our experience in keeping cider sweet for winter .use. is to take of grated horse radish root one quart, and one box of ground mustard ; to a barrel of cider, putting it in immediately after making. We kept our cider sweet from Novem her to April las\ winter in this wav. We consider it the be-t of all the receipts we have ever tried. Mrs. J. T. Speck. Chili, Miami Co., Ind . Aug. 27. — - J In 1835, Sir Robert Peel pre •ented a farmers’ club, at Tamworth, with two iron plows of the best construction. On his next visit the old plows with the wooden mould boards were again at work. “Sir,” said a member of the chib, “we tried the iron, and we be alt of one mind that they do make the weeds grow.” A gentleman recently left at the o'lice of the Vincennes, Ind., ; Times four ears of corn weighing ••ven pounds. Each ear contain ed 22 rows, each row 55 grains of c »rn. making in the aggregate 4,840. A young boy at Richmond bet “two bits” that he could lie down on the track-lied and let-the train pAAS over him, and the train did, thonghlhe boy was minus his head r *nd caah by the operation. In 1867 Italian statistics show out of 170.456 marriages there were 97,159. considerably more than one-half the whole number, in which neither the bride nor bridegroom oould either reed or write!
