In Quiet Days. The dying year grows strangely mild; Now in the hazy autumn weathor My heart is like a happy child, And life and I, friends reconciled, Go over the hills together. My peaceful days run sweet and si'll As waters slipping over sand, Seeking the shadows of free will To gather tenderer lights than fill Day's over lavish hand. The summer wood with music rings, The singer's is a troubled breast; I am no more the bird that sings, But that which broods with folded wings Upon its quiet nest. Oh! fairest month of all the year! Oh, sweetest days in life! they melt Within, without, is autumn cheer, September there, September here, So tranquil and sb sweet. Oft have I watched all night with grief, All night with joy, and which is best? Ah, both were sharp, and both were brief, My heart was like a wind-blown leaf, I give them both for rest. Fair Quiet, close to Joy allied, But loving shadier walks to keep, By day is ever at my side; And all night long with me abide Peace and her sister Sleep. Perquisites of a Debutante, j The philosopher who said that if i he could mark out his career in i life he would be a woman until 30, a soldier until 60, and the remainder of his life a priest, certainly showed sagacity in wishing to enjoy the bloom of womanhood, whatever one may think of the desirability of the sword of the monk’s cowl. It is almost impossible for the masculine mind to comprehend the delightful, intoxi- j cation of being very young, very I beautiful, and very charming. De- f butantes of all kinkspartake of the ‘ social hasheesh in proportion to | their charms, but even the ugliest i lasses find the world more or less ' couleur de rose for at least three i seasons, while the fresh, . dainty ) damsels whose youth and bright-, ness refresh the most blase habitues of Vanity Fair, are in danger of being carried off their feet altogether in a whirlwind of admira- ; tion. They are told a dozen times ! a day’ that their eyes are beautiful, their hair the prettiest shade imaginable, and their dimples irresistible. When they, enter ball-' rooms they are immediately sur-, rounded by an anxious circle of, admirers, who implore a dance, and ! are thankful for as much as a word I or a smile. Kindly old folk de j clare, in audible voices, that “Arabella is a sweet, pretty creature, — almost as handsome as her mother was.” If Arabella commits any i gaucherie, or offends the proprie - tics, everybody declares that “she is only a child,” and nobody except flinty hearted spinsters, who have not a single name down on ! their cards, and are in horrible doubt how they are going to get! into supper, ever undertakes to j criticise them harshly. In short, i all this busy, whirligig world takes time to smile upon these fresh, human primroses, daisies, and violets,i is charmed by their fragrant na»vete, and honest impulses, and watches with interfst the changes ■ which eventually convert the ■ blooming maiden into the admira- . ble wife. Feminine Tactics. A favorite method of destroying or marring the matrimonial pros- . poets of each other is, when any young woman is evidently rising i into the realms of bellehood, to report her engaged, always taking j care to speak of the victim as really very charming, but engaged. ■ You will hear some of your friends i thus disposed of whom you are • quite certain have no idea of giving I up the privilege of single blessedness. It is only necessary to be seen with a gentleman a few times to start the thing, and when it is fastened upon you no amount ofi protestation will make society disbelieve it, so that you have but two ' alternatives: either to marry the man in cold blood, or else drive , him away and lose his society and ' friendship?" Fortunately for the men. there exist some sensible women who won’t let an idle report, break up their pleasant relations with a gentleman, but have the nerve and good sense to live down the silly gossip of those people who i take this method of annoying them. Besides, a man who is attracted by ■ a charming girl and allows himself to be scared off, bullied, or intimidated by a “report” of her en-| gagement, don't deserve her. and is a poor stick at best. The oldest man in Indiana died in Millon township, Jcficrson county, on last Sunday. His name was Johnson Brown, and he was one hundred and nine yeaas old. He waa born in 1760, the same year that George the Third ascended the throne of Great Britain, and while I the French still had possession of all the vast territory west of the Allegheny mountains
