Pen portrait of “Josh Billings.” In man)' of his articles in broken English‘Josh Billings’ surpasses all who have tried that clasS ß of writing. But to fully appreciate him you must see know him. He is about forty-eight years old, and is the quaintest specimen of humanity with which we have ever met". . Five years ago he was an auctioneer in Poughkeepsie, N. 1. lie has since moved to Neiy Yorkcity, where he keeps a boarding house amused by his irrepressibleoddities. As he passes down ; Broadway he cannot escape ob- I serration. His broad, bent form,_! his immense hat, and his large, j eagle like features, are always noticeable. His weakness is for chewing tobacco and telling stories. Such quaint, laughable yarns as he can spin are not easily put in print. When the lecture season is at hand he sends out a humorous prospect i us. He makes from three to four thousand dollars a year from his lecturing, and as much more from his newspaper work. Always cheerful ami genial, always witty and vet kind, he is liked exceed i ingly hr his..circle of friends.. Perhaps some of our renders will! remember the publicity that was given a lit do time ago to the; marriage of one of hisglaug'.iters, 1 whose beauty had become notori- ‘ ous. She was as handsome as lie was ugly.— St.'Paid Dispatch. Evenings. The lav who spends an hour of each evening lounging i lly on a street corner, wastes in the course i of a year, three hundred and sixtylive precious hours, which, if ap plied to study, would familarize . him with the rudiments of almost any of the familiar sciences. If in addition to wasting an hour each evening, he spends ten cents lor a cigar, which is usually the case. ' the amount thus worse that lasted, would pay fur ten of the leading periodicals of the country. Boys, think of these things. Think how much precious time ; and good money you are wasting, ! and for what? The gratification afforded by the lounge on the corner, or by the cigar, is not only temporary, but positively hurtful. You cannot indulge in these pra'c- ! tiecs without seriously injuring ! yourselves. You acquire idle and wasteful habit, w hich will cling to you through life, and grow upon you with each succeeding ye; r You may in afterlife slyikg;, them off, bit the probabilities are uiat the habits thus formed in early life will remain with you till your i dyjng day. Be warned then in j time, ami resolve that as the hour spent in idleness is gone forever, you will improve each passing one, and thereby fit yourselves for U icfulncss and happiness. Tin’ Wife : —lt is astonishing to see how well a man may live; on a small income, who has a handy ami industrious wifeSome men live an I make a better i appearance on six or eight dollars a wteek than others do on sixteen? dr eighteen dollars. The man doesilts pri# well, but the wife is ] gobd'-foignotliing. She will. up-1 braid her husband for not living in as good stile as her neighbor; while the fault is entirely her own. ' Her neighbor has a neat, capable, industrious wife, and that makes tlift-dilfvrence. His wife, on the - hand, is a whirlpool, b.Tto , which a great many silver cups ! might be thrown-, ami the appear mice of the water would not- be changed. No Nicholas- tile diver, ’ is there to restore the wasted treasure-. It is only an insult for ] Huch a woman to talk to her hus- t baud about love and devotion. ; : Keeping a Secret. i The Newport M.reuen relates a capital story of Stuart, the painter, < which illustrates finely the power * whidi a secret has.to propagate it 1 self, if once allowed a little airing, and to reach a few ears. Stuart had, as he suppos L discovered a secret art of coloring—very vain- : , able. He told it to a friend. His Client! valued it very hfghly, and carafe a tim ■ afterwards to ask premission to communicate it. un <ler oath of eternal secrecy, to a friend of his .who needed every possible aid t > enable him to rise. “Let me see," said Stuart, making a chalk mark on a board at hand; “1 know the art, and that is—■ / “One,” said his friend - “You know it,” said Stuart 4 making another mark by th? side of the one already made; “and that is—” “Two,” cried the other. “Well, you tdl y<Tur friend, and that will be—” making a third in irk — “Three only," said the other. “No,” asiil Stuart, “it is one hundred and eleven !” (Ill).
