Died. —On Sunday last, Mis. Fanny Spullor, wife of Joseph Spuller, ot Union township. Wheat. —Wheat commands one dollar per bushel in this market, with a railroad to take it away it would sell at least fifteen cents better. Dry.—We noticed the first dust of the season this week. For nearly a year we have had unusu ally wet weather, and while we are glad to see it “dry up," the other extreme is not desirable. Personal,—Csarley McKee and F. C. Leßlond, of Celina, gave us a call this week. They are both clever gentlemen, but they cant sing—away from home. Commercial. — The Chicago Times of Wednesday quotes No. 1 white winter wheat at 81 55; No. 2,81 50; ordinary down to 81 25. Corn was quoted at 94@95|c for No. 2, No. 1 being entirely neglected. Oats ruled from 48 to 55 cents. Repeal of The Registry Law.
—ln answer to repeated inquiries by township officers, as we understand it, thp registry law’ is repealed with the exception of that clause requiring ballots to be printed on white paper. A new section of the law requires that the ballot of each voter be numbered by the Inspector to correspond with the number opposite the name of the voter on the poll list. Received. —We have received the acts of the regular and special session of the legislature, which me at the Clerk's office ready for distribution to the proper officers. Quite a number of reports of the various benevolent of the State have been received ; also the report of the Superintendent of I’ublic Instruction, which are for general distribution.
jar The question of requiring the members of the Virginia legislature to take thtpest oath has been submitted to Attorney Gen eral Hoar for his opinion. His opinion, judging from two instances upon which he has acted, will require the members to take the oath. As the reconstruction infamy is silent upon the question, and taking Radical examples, Gen. Sherman can exercise his own discretion without regard to the Attorney General's opinion, the law giving him that privilege, and we hope he will exercise it.
Sabbath School Convention.— Yesterday a Convention of the Sabbath Schools of Adams county was held in the grove on the conn ty land, south of town. The fol lowing schools were represented : Pleasant Mills school, A. 11. Mock Superintendent, 40 scholars ; Concord school, J. Bottenberg Superintendent, 90 scholars; Pleasant Vale school, Samuel Moses Superintendent, 65 scholars; Decatur Presbyterian school, Samuel Moses Superintendent, 60 scholars; Decatur Methodist school, W. 11. Schrock Superintendent, 120 scholars; Mount Faber school, George McCullough Superintendent, 35 scholars. The different schools met at 10 o’clock at the M. E. Church whence they marched to the grove, headed by the Decatur Silver Band. Arrived at the grove, the Convention was addressed by A. S. Evans, of Fort Wayne. He spoke of the necessity of County Sabbath School organizations, auxilliary to the State Sunday School Union, and was glad to sec the interest manifested by our people in Sabbath Schools. He paid a high tribute to the State organization of Illinois; the last convention being represented by 2,500 delegates from every county in the State. He closed by hoping that at the next meeting of the State Sunday School Union every county would be fully represented
A. R. Stone, of Fort Wayne, followed in a “six minute” speech which was protracted to a half an hour, especially directed to the young folks, and which was in the highest degree entertaining and instructive, when the Convention adjourned for dinner. In consequence of being compelled to go to press, we are unable to report further proceedings, but will furnish oiir readers with the official report to be furnished by the Secretary, next week.
The Eclipse.—Last Saturday afternoon the whole town was agape with wonder and expectation preparing to see the eclipse. Every youngster who could command a piece of smoked glass wms trying to look old Sol out of countenance, and jwas the envied central attraction of those less favored. Human nature, among these little folks, displayed itself in exhibitions of selfishness that those later in life practice for other purposes. One urchin we noticed wms never tired looking. “Let me look, Billy,” said one of his comrades, and though Billy was looking with might and main, he couldn't “see it” just then, but he faithfully reported in language that evidenced he was conscious of his importance, and that he had already secured a pretty thorough knowledge of big I and little you in comparing himself with his associates.
Turning our gaze in another direction, wc recognized “old mossyback,” from Jay county. His remarks were evidently original. What has been lost to science by the failure of the government to secure his services, probably will never be known. We withhold our notes taken on the cccasiorr for fear friend Jones would be putting on airs over Adams for producing two as smart men as Johnpetercleavehetc. and “mossyback” during one generation. To return to the eclipse. The day was magnificent, not a cloud visible ; the atmosphere “clear as a bell," and every thing as favor aKleas could be desired to witness the unusual phenomenon. Precisely at the time indicated the first contact took place. Gradually the light faded out, the color of the atmosphere changing to a greenish hue, as it grew darker, until the earth was lit up by a wierd light as when, as is popularly supposed, “grave yards yawn” and witches appear on “blasted heaths." At this time but a small portion of the outer edge of the sun s disc was perceptible. In a few moments the gloom commenced failing away with the returning light, and but a short time elapsed until old Sol was himself again. In another place we give the report of the scientific party sent out by the Government, who were stationed at Des Moines, lowa.
