Instead he gave £4O to a hospital for children, of which the Popo is a Pastor, and which is freely open to all classes. -Horace Greeley, editor; Ulysses S. Grant, mute; James Brooks, statesmen; and Charles S. Spencer, lawyer, were the names given by a party arrested for gambling on Saturday evening last, at 25th street and 4th avenue, N. Y. -The grain trade of New Orleans is asserted to be increasing rapidly. Two vesels have recently cleared from that port for Liverpool, ope with 13,000, and the other with 23,000 bushels of wheat. This is about the first material evidence of prosperity in that region since the war. -California journals call loudly for the establishment pf more paper mills in the interior of that state. They say that manufacture will pay better just now than almost any other, especially if managed by Eastern men. -At a sale ofengravings in London, last month, a magnificent impression of Rembrandt's etching, “Christ Healing the Sick in the j Temple,” known to connoiseurs as the '.‘Hundred Guilder Piece,” was purchased for the enormous sum of £l,lOO, or 85,500 in gold. It is probably the finest impression : extant. We could go on and cite thousands of examples of old men who commenced a new study and struck out into an entirely new pursuit, either of livelihood or amusement, at an advanced age.
