Jhere s a sinless brew with a radiant '.i crown. And a cross laid down in the dust, There’s a smile wliere never a shade comes now. And tears no more from those dear eyes flow, So sweet in their innocent trust. Ah, well! and summer is comming again Singing her same old song; But, Oh! it sounds like a sob of pain, As it floats in the sunshine and the rain O'er hearts of the world s great throng. There is silence midst the tree-tops; Birdanswers not to bird; Save the rushing of the waters, No other sound is hard. Clouds gather 'midst the tree-tops; Down comes the falling rain: Fast rushes past the wind-sprite,— Loud sounds his wild rest ain. There is anguishTnidst the tree-tops,. As they bend in solemn pain; Their mighty one, their monarch, Lies prostrate of the plain.
There is shriekingj midst th? tree-tops,— "Wild laughter on the breeze:®. There is shaking, jumbling, crashing, Midst all the forest trees. JJROSF ECTUS OF TUB CONMITOTIONAL UNION. a > -w— *- The attention of the Democracy throughout the Country is earnest y called to the terrible condition of affairs inaugurated and consummnted.by the pnity in power, which has delitieraely falsified its pledges and in defiance of the most, sacred obligations is moving Heaven and Earth to convert the Republic and erect upon the ruinsuof Constitutional Liberty a hughe, remorseless and gigantic despotism wlch will keenact the horrors of the uid World. ' The earnest painful consideration of all thoughtful and reflective men whocare more for country than they do for party has been direeled to this fiict, end they view vtith feelings of alarm, dhe rapid march of the Radical party In its endeavors to erect an Ehiprre upon thiscorithieut instead of the Republic bf our Fathers.. By tho most insidioui and' hypperitieal steps it has steadily nd--' vanced to its aim over the wreck and ruin, of our most sacred constitutional* guarantees. It inaugurated the bloodiest war of modern times to destroy thaCarticle of the Constitution by -which every State has the right to regulate its’ domestic affairs. It pulled down the Habeas Corpus— it trampled .upon trialby jury—it enforced the most ruthless conscription ever known in the history of nations—it covered the hills and valleys of the South, with half a million- 1 corpses of our best and bravest sons-4-it has piled uponms n debt not only appalling in its mgnitude, anti crushing the industry and prosperity of our people, but one also daily increasing making the rich rich or end the poor poorerit£s steadily grinding down the people to a condition of far worse than Africauslavery. It is eating up the substance of the land by a foul, vile and ui\jnst taxation, in order to obtain money tospread its corruptions—it is ruining Hie country with its obbthinable tariffs—it has sub jected six million of our countrymen tp the most odious despotism that humanity hns ever been subjected to - il has elevated a degraded and basial race of negroes to complete social equality with ourselves, and has through fraud, through hypocrisy, through most monstrous villainy, elected to the Preaidency n soldier whoso only recommendation for that high office is that he is the supple and sul servcnt tool of worst follies and crimes of the Radicals. Our Government is a foul tyranny at homo, a reproach and disgrace abroad. And all this unspeeakablo misery and degratlj ntion have been imposed upon our once free, happy aud glorious country in order to change the fundamental principle of our Government, destroy our Republican institutions and build up a bloody and despotic Empire upon the ruins of tbe Republic, It now becomes the sacred duty of the Democratic party, in view of this terrible condition of things, to gird up their loins for a war to the knife upon Radicalism. There must be no compromise. The Constitution of our Fathers is wi imminent danger! Our countrymen arc enslaved, and the Radical party'is forging the chains to bind our own liiabs. Tho Democratic party must break them, aud destroy the power of the Radical party to over forge them again. Their chief magistrate has hypocritically said,“Let. us have peace!’’ He means the peace which masters give to si ives! The Democratic party, ever faithful to its old traditions of constitutional liberty and law, rises iitthc moral sublimity of it* devotion to the Constitution of our Fathers nnd tells the usurper and his felloW tyrants there shall be no pence until they respect the laws and iiistitntions bequeathed us by the Sires of ’i<>. There shall be no peace, even if wo continue the struggle until the Day of Judgment, so long as the Republic is threatened. The liemocrutic party will permit no monarchy in our country, and pledges itself to resist all iunovat 'ons upon our Republican institutions so long as one arm remains to wield a brand or one breast remains to “bare itself to the
Upon the accession of General Grunt to the Presidency, The Constitutions. Union stated that so far as was co"sistcat with our life-long devotion to Democratic principles it would accord his administration a cheerful support. Bitt lie has shown himself so thorougly a tool of the Radical usurpers, and hu.i gone so fur to degrade a co ordinate branch of the Government into a no.niuii 1 clerkship to Congress, that Ths I niox would stultity its high record If it. conld support him any longer. Unaweti by the threats and unmoved J>y the temptations of power during the bloody days of the war, The Constiti tioxai Union fought the tyranny of the Radicals and their despotic infractions of the Constitution with vigor, an ettfncflndss and a seal which won for it a proud and honorable reputation as a powerful and unconquerable champion of Democratic institutious and Democratic principles* We take up arras again for the endangerof our Fathers, and shall not lay them down again so long as it is in danger. We call earnestly upon the Democratic party to heed our admonitions and imitate our example—to renew the fight—to draw the sword and throw away the scabbard, and to con—tinne the contest, neither giving nor asking quarter till the fight be over and the day be won, or we ourselves perish amid the general wrecks of all our liberties.
