SB* Sort’s THE ANSWER. I mused upon the source of bliss, And tried to analyze a kies. I wondered such delight could spring From such a simple, trifling thing. Two pairs of lips a moment meet, A touch, no more—but, oh, how sweetl And long as life thrills through the ▼eins, The pressure of that kiss remains. Lo long I mused, and much I thought But all my reasoning came to naught And something whispered, “Foolish man! Thou canst not solve it, no man can!’ Just then the pretty Maud came in, With cherry lips and dimpled s chjn. U O rarest girl, come (ell me this: Whence spring the rapture of a kiss?’’ And fit for dull philosopher The answer that I got from her. “0 stupid man, who vainly looks For buds and flowers in dusty books; And seeks the joy that loves inspi’es la brooding over dying fixes. If you would know wherefore the r"«e Is sweet, go pluck it where it grows.’ I took her counsel—ah well, I'm wiser—but I never tell.
The Lakes of Nevada.” Nevada has seven lakes of considerable size. Lake Tahoe, in the Sierra Nevada mountains, is <5,000 feet above of the sea. It lies about equally in Nevada and California, is remarkably clear and cool, and celebrated for the abundance and excellence of its fish, trout weighing 20 to 30 pounds being often cnughMn it. The scenery is beautiful, and it is a great summer resort. The lake is 20 miles long by or in width. Washes lake, in Washoe valley, is but six or eight miles in length at d t tree or four in width. The waters are alkaline. Pyramid lake is 30 miles in lenth and 10 to 12 wide, and 4,000 feet above the sea. It is in Humboldt county. A rock rises 600 feet above the surface in the form of a pyramid, and gives name to the lake. It abounds in tine trou*. Walker lake, injEsmer nlda county, is an irregular sheet of waiter 25 miles long and from 6 to 10 wide. It has an elevation of 4,200 feet, and is well stocked with fish. Carson lake, in Churchill county, is oval shaped and aboutlO miles in diameter. The water is very salt. Humboldt lake, in Humboldt county, “is 25 miles Ung by 10 wide. The water is very impure, with alkali and salt. The sink of the Carson and Humboldt rives is a long, shallow sheet of very'brackish water, extending greatly in every direction during the rainy season, and contracting very much in the summer.
The Buffalo’s Luxury.—The buffaloes found in the telegraph poles of the overland line a new source of delight on the treeless j prairie—tlua novelty of having I something to scratch against. But, it was expensive scratching for ■ the telegraphic company, and there . indeed was the rub, for the bisons • shook down miles of wire daily.— 1 A bright idea struck somebody to send to St. Paul and Chicago for all the bradawls that could be; purchased, and these were driven I into the poles with a view to wound the animals and check their rubbing propensity. Never was a greater mistake. The buffaloes were delighted. For the fust time they came to the scratch sure of a sensation in their thick hides that thrilled them from horn to tail.— j They would go fifteen miles to find ■ n bradawl. They fought huge battles around the poles containing them, and the victor would proudly climb the mountainous heap of rump and hump of the fallen and scratch himself into bliss until the bradawl broke, or pole came down. There has been no demand for bradawls from the Kansas region since tlic first invoice. Illness Caused by Chagrin. Throe or four days ago Washington dispatches announced that President Grant was sick. On yesterday, they made a similar announcement. New York papers say that “his illness is caused by chagrin," because of the estrangement between Rawlins and Shcrnan. Illness caused by chagrui is incurable. It arises from “a mind diseased," for which no physician can “administer.” Cold water and pickled cabbage are some times beneficial in such cases but as a rule, they are chronic, and beyond reinody.— Chicago Times.
At a school exhibition given one ■ night last week, four miles from ; Plymouth, a theatrical performance containing a duel was part of the entertainment. The pistols nsed were supposed to be unloaded but wiien the triggers were pulbd, frne of them wen t off, and the bullet entered the right side of one of the performers, inflicting a probably fatal wouud. The pistol had boon borrowed for the occasion and was supposed to contain no load.
Miecellanous Items. A child wanting to describe a snake said it was “a thing all tail, clear up to the head. In a velocipede race at Indianapolis lately, a mile was made in three minutes and six seconds. Since the organization of the Memphis police force, in 1867, eight of its members have been murdered. The number of horses in the United States is 8,000,000, representing in money value upward of 82,000,000,000.
The four-wheeled velocpede is apparently taking precedence of the original “bicycle.” In one day, aecently, 37 stolen watches were voluntarily returned to the poHee of New York. New York car-drivers are compelled to take out 25 cent licenses. Two thousand citizens of Indianapolis signed the pledge at the beginning of the year, and eleven of them are believed to have kept it thus far. The daily business of the gam-bling-hells in Helena, Montana averages 8250,000 in gold-dust and greenbacks. A Connecticut boy, of Danbury, lately under took the job of drowning a cat, by putting it in a a paper bag with a stone, and throwing it into a pond. The result was that the cat arrived home before the boy did. The mansion of Thomas Jefferson, at Monticello, three miles from Charlottesville, Va.,is sadly in need of repair, and has been stripped of many thing of interest and value. Rather a singular notice appears inbneofthe New York papers: “The person who left a human leg on the roof of the building No. 22 Irving place, on Wednesday, can obtain the same by applying at at the above number.” Mr. Peter Cooper has given 820,000 for the purchase of a model'illustrating the forms in which power may be applied to machinery, for the Cooper Institute. The models are to be purchased in Darmstadt, Germany. A penitentiary is built over hot spring Carson City, Nevada, and the land is found to be slowly but steadily sinking. The prisoners are anything but pleased at the prospect of being swallowed up. Minnesota has a law prohibiting the destruction of quails until the year 1875. The birds were introduced to preserve and propagate them, and they are now quite numerous. It is said that on the maps used by the Hindoos, Africa is depicted as a small island, and America, is made one of its chief towns. We trust that the Hindoos are not intentionally sarcastic at our expense. The people of Norris, Fulton-, county, Me., have suffered to such an extent from the depredations ■ ofhorse thieves and other robbers i lately, that they have organized a vigilance committee, with John t Hays for president, and Benjamin Hageman for secretary. Nevada is exercised over a musical hen of the black Spanish breed• which will sing at her mistress’ i command, and, after uttering the ‘ first notes, will spread her wing! stretch her neck, and pour a strain that lacks nothing in earnestness! however much it may in melody. 1 Capt. Owen Chase died in Nantucket, Tuesday, age 74. He was mate of the Essex, which was capsized and sunk by a whale in the Pacific in 1820. The crew I took to the boats and the pa|>er innocently asserts” that “the suffering he then endured were the remote cause of his death.” As he lived 19 years afterward, they must havs been a very remote cause. It is estimated that the snow in . Tuckman’s ravine, in the White , mountains, is at least a thousand feet deep. Hopes nre entertained of a magnificent snow arch there next August. It is noticed by the New York papers that the English flag appears at the head of more masts lat the wharves in that city than 1 our own stars and stripes. The hend-light on a locamotivo 'on the Louisville and Nashville' • railroad was suddenly extinguish-' Icd one night last week. The train ’ was stopped, and the engineer, on I examining the head-light found a I living jacksnipe crouching beside the lamp, it bad shattered in its swift flight The bird is unharm--1 ed, and has been adopted by the , fireman on the train. There is at the foot of the Green
