''4' ■ ' Time was when girls could card and spin, '< And wash and make and brew; Bat now they have to keep a mai’d, If they Have night to do. \ . I do not blame the bachelor; His courage must bo great To think to wed a modern miss, If small be his estate. Tima was when wites would help to . buy, » The land they helped to till, And saddle Dobbin, shell the corn, And ride away to mill. The bachelor is not to blame; If he's a prudent man, He now must lead a single life, And do the best he can. gftUnlUnnw, l: i-—. :.z.z=r=r. Gen. Hancock on Rations. A Philadelphia paper says : We I cilt the following anecdote of Gen. I Hancock from the history of the | ] 40th regiment published in one ofi our exchanges;. The author, > speaking of the scarcity of rations says: They were scarce with us—so much so that some of the boys bought of other regiments. During thescarc'ty, Blake happenedto be on guard at Hancock’s head- i quarters. He was pacing his beat very industriously in front of the j general’s tent, about daylight, when the general rolled out of bed j and came to the door. ‘•Soldier, are you from the 1 140th ?” “Yes, sir.’’ “Is it true rations are scarce?” “Yes sir.” “You havn’t enough ?” “No, sir.” “How many have you? Half enough?” “I think so, sir.” “Well it’s a d—n poor soldier : who can’t steal the other half.’’ With the last remark he went to ■ bed again, while Blake renewed his labors. Before long the cook began pre- < paring breakfast. One thing after ! another was put on the table in : : the mess tent, and finally a plate , of hot biscuit. While the cook returned to the kitchen, Blake ’ stepped up, emptied them into Yiis;' haversack, and resumed his walk. 1, Breakfast was announced, and the : 1 general went in. He had not been there long before he called the rook to bring in some bread. The : cook told him he put hot cakes on 1 tho table. Some conversation j 1 passed between them, and the gen- j cral stepping to the door, watched i ( Blake very closely. Blake walked ,1 hi? beat apparently unconscious of any one being within a mile. What a queer people those Sandwich Islanders are. You 1 wonder why they are no longer carnivorous, and conclude the climate is so much warmer than formerly, that it has destroyed i both appetite and energy. This want of activity yon notice in every thing. It is not confined totho people alone. The very ani niaje are enervated. The cats Aiey.tr catch ruts or mice. On the cyHitrarv, they live together most Rooters stand around one leg nil day. and crow all night. Hens only lay under pro tost, and as few eggs as possible., It is-a curious country in every ■ way. They have cats without tails for they would be useless append-1 nges; no kitten would have energy : enough to run after her tail if she ' had one, and no child born there ' is vigorous enough to pull it for her. Some of the rerv, birds on Hawaii have no wings as i though nature herself recognized the fact that they would never be used if given. 'You find geese upon the highest mountains, miles away from water, while-the-Wrses are ampbibous. and feed under water in the marshes and ponds, with only the tips of their ears visible, through which, yott are '.old, they breathe, and yon do not for an instant doubt it ; for in a country where the natives mount them from the wrong side, where in eucher the ten takes tho ace. ■where John B ill sometimes becomes civil because it.is too warm to .bluster, and where Jonathan, with all his love and pride of bis country, consents to expatriate himself and children, anything is possible.
