“Plated Oct.”—A New York special to the Cincinnati Cominerciai, under date of the 25th inst., contains the following item : “Joseph Howard, Jr., managing editor, Franklin J. Ottarson, night editor, and John Armstrong city editor of the Democrat, and other members of Pomeroy's staff, leave the paper next week. The opinion in Printing House Square is that Pomeroy has nt last discovered his mistake, and that the notoriety of his journal having passed away, he will soon be obliged to discontinue its publication. Oyster Saloon and Confectionery.—Bill Closs has opened an Oyster Saloon and Confectioner}’ establishment in his new building on Monroe Street, two doors west of Closs’s Shoe Store. Bill has the neatest saloon in town, and everything appears in "npplo pie order.” Our citizens will always find him supplied with fresh oysters, fruits, candies, pies, etc. As there are no liquors sold at this establishment, the ladies will find it a pleasant resort, and should not fail to give our young friend a call. Everybody should 1 patronize him. *j National Monument —The Washington National Monument Society has addressed an appeal to the pastors of tho religious congregations of the United States asking them to cause collections to be taken np in their respective churches on the Sunday imniedi- l ately proceeding the 22d of Feb raary, tho amount to be remitted to the treasurer of the society, in order that the work on the monument may be resumed. The appeal is signed by Andrew John- | son. President, ex offl io; S. J. Bowers, first vice President; Ulvs•es S. Grant, second vice President; W. A Corcoran, third vice President; J. R. H. Smith, Treas-' nrer; John Corroll, brevet Seers-J tsry.
A document just published shows the numbers of judgments rendered by the United States Court of Claims during the present year, the names of the parties in whose favor they were rendered of their attorneys, and the amounts awarded. The Court gave favorable judgments in fifty three cot ton cases, the cotton having been captured by the United States forces. Claimants in all such suits are required to prove their loyality to the United States at the time of the capture. Collector Smythe has declined the tender of a testimonial /rom the officers of Customs of New York, who proposed to have his portrait painted and hung up in the Collector’s office, there to be always preserved. In his reply to the flattering letter of these gen tiemen he expressed a hope for the early passage, by Congress, of Mr. Jenck’s civil service bill. Mr. Clinch, the present Collector, has accepted a similar compliment proposed. It is beginning to leak out that the proposition of Butler and oth er radical congressmen, to repeal the tenure-of office act for Presi dent Grant’s benefit, is all sham. The Jacobins would like to con ciliatc Grant by “keeping the word of promise to the ear;” but their suspicions of his “loyalty to the party” create in them an overrul ing intenntion to "break it to the i hope.” j At Qniucy, 11l ,is a German with ; a curious blood mark. It is a per s ect deer, about the size of a si 1 ver dollar, andon his right cheek , The form and outline of the deer , are perfect as could be drawn by lan artist, and show a deer in the act of leaping. It is of a bright red color.
Beecher's son has been the vic tim of “hazing” sophomores at Yule, who shaved his head in Ben edictine fashion. Every yeaFa devoted son of the church sends the pope a swan fro.n Norwich, England. atuu.-u ■VVrOMAN.--FEMA|!.'Er’, “OWING TO ' TV the peculiar nii-.i important, rcla-i tions which they sustain, their peculiar organization, and the offices they per- ; form, arc subject to many sufferings.— Freedom from these contribute in no small degree to their happiness and wel- , fare, for none can be truly happy who i are ill. Not only to, but no one of these j various female complaints can long be suffered to run on without involving the ■ general health of the individual, and ' ere long producing permanent sickness I and premature decline. Nor is it pleas | ant to consult a physician for the relief of these various delicate affections, and only upon the most urgent necessity will ■ a true woman so fai sacrifice her greatest charm as to do this. The sex will then thank us for placing in tljcir hands simple, specifics which will be found efficacious in relieving and curing almost every one of those troublesome com-1 plaints peculiar to their sex. Helmboi.o'sExtbactozßucttu.—lltin-i dreds suffer on in silence, and hundreds | of others apply vainly to druggists and doctors, who cither merely tantalize them with the hope of a eure or apply ; remedies which make them worse. I would not wish to assort anything that would do injustice to the afflicted, but I am obliged to say that although it may I be produced ftormexccssivc exhaustion of , the powers of life, by laborious employ- ; raent, unwholesome air and food, profuse ! menstruation, the use.of tea and coffee. ' and frequent childbirth, it is tar oftener j caused by direct irritation, applied to ’ the mucous membrane of the vagina it- , self. When reviewing the causes of these . hlistresslng complaints, it is most pain- ■ fill to contemplate the attendant evils constqusnt fifion them It is but simple justice to the subject to enumerate a few of the nmny additional causes | which so largely affect the life, health, i and happ : ness of woman in all classes of society, and which, consequently, affect more or less directly,- the welfare of tl.e entire human family. The mania : that exists for precocious educat or: tnd 1 marriage, causes the years that nature ! designed for corporeal development to be wasted and perverted in the restraints of dress, the early confinement of school, and especially in the unhealthy excitement of the ball-room. Thus with.the body half-clothed, and the mind unduly excited by pleasure, perverting in midnight revel the hours designed by nature for sleep and rest, the work of. destruction is half accomplished. In consequence of this early strain upon Imr system, unnecessary effort is required by the delicate votary to retain her situation in school at a later day, thus aggravating the evil. When one excitement is over, another in prospco-. tire keeps the mind morbidly sensitive to impression, while the now constant restraint of fashionable dress, absolutcthe exercise indispensable to the attainment and retention of organic health and strength; the exposure to night air; the sudden change of temperature; the comple'e pros'ranon produced by excessive dancing, mu c t. of necessity produce their legitimate effect.— At last, an c s rlv imtniagecr.ps the climax of misery, and the unfortunate one, hitherto so utterly regardless of the plain dictates and remonstrances of her delicate nature, becomes an unwilling subject of medical treatment. This is but a truthful picture of the experience of thousands of our young women. Long before the ability t . exeicise the functions Os the generative organs, they require an education of their peculiar nervous system, composed of ehat is called the tissue, which is. in common with the female breast and lips, evidently under the control of mental emotions and asMjciatious at an early period of life; and. as we shall subsequently sec, these when excessive, lend, long before pubeiity, to habits which saplhc very life of their victims ere nature h;ts self-completed their development
