411 Sprtsi of Paragraph*. Forty stone ware kettles, each about three feet in diameter, were recently found near Kingstone, Tenn., ata depth of seven feet under the ground. They were found lying on a limesto.no rock, near an old well, eight inches in diameter, filled with salt water. Poplar and oak trees of great age were growing on the surface soil. A man who requested a Chicago jeweler, the other day, to show him a diamond ring valued at 83,000, pqt it on his finger, courteously bade the jeweler goodbye, and walked rapidly out of the door which he shut, putting a block of wood behind the handle in such a way that it was impossible to open it fronj the inside. Illinois imported enough lumber last year to build a three board fence twice around the world anc once around herself. So far, in the history’ of the world, no other race but the White race, has ever succeeded in establishing and preserving a Republican fdrm of government —and not all the branches even of the White race, seem to be able to do it. This one great fact should have more influence upon sensible men, than a cart load of superficial abstract theories about natural rights. The St. Joseph (Mo.) 27erdW has gladdened the hearts of a number of its readers by announcing the discovery, near Noddaway, in that state, of what it calls a “Whiskey Spring,” from which flows a liquid that looks, tastes and smells like whiskey, and has the same intoxicating effect. The officers of the Pennsylvania Railroad say’ there is not a word of truth in the statement, published editorially in the New York Tribune of the 19th, and its Chicago letter of the 18th inst., of an attempt to assassinate General Logan on his passage through York, Pa., nor was any assault made upon the train in which he was a passenger. A boarding-hoyse keeper in Buffalo, who died a few days ago, left a handsome legacy to one of her hoarders, whose only' claim to her favor was that he never found fault at table. He was a very patient man, and deserved a reward. Youatt, the well-known veter inary surgeon, who has been bitten eight or ten times by rabid ani mals, says that crystal of the nitrate of silver rubbed into the wound will positively prevent hydrophobia in the bitten person or animal. The joke practical does not always end as harmless as in the case of Nathaniel Appleton, who found on riding up to th t house of his beloved that his rival’s hbrsc was hitched at the gate. Unhitching him and giving him a very smart stroke with a rawhide, he walked in and inquired whosg horse that was cantering down the street. It need not be said that he found the coast clear at once. A young Indian girl, who had curiously watched the process of marking barrel heads in a flouring mill in Winona, Minn., stole in one day, taking posession of the stencils, ornamented her blanket with the words, “Ellsworth’s Choice” and paraded the streets in great delight, but to the disgust of Mr Ellsworth, who is a bachelor, and has made no such choice. ' Rather Overdoing it. —Not long since a gentleman of Fayette, Miss., had a negro arrested and brought before Daniel Ellis, Esq., , on a chafge ol killing his hog; the evidence was almost positive, and no doubt was entertained of his conviction. But the defendant proved conclusively by negro testimony that he was at three different places at the time the hog was killed. The French Empress has been treated hommopathically fora sore throat, and hoin<eopathy bids fair to become fashionable in France. The new Pacific Mail steamship Alaska is about completed, and ply between New York and Aspinwall. The water-wheel shafts weigh forty tous each, and are the heaviest work ever made in America. William Chapman, of Chapmanborough, Northampton county, Penn., is building a Masonic temple, which he intends to present, handsomely furnished, to the brvthern in that vicinity. It is estimated to cost 520,000. The Illinois State Penitentiarv at Joliet has 1,119 convicts.
