CASTLE AND COTTAGE. There stands a castle by tl\c sea, With an ancient keep and turrets three And in it dwells a lady rare, Rich and lovely with golden hair, By the wild waves flashing wearily. In it dwells a baron bold, Gallant and young, with store of gold Store of all that man can crave To cheer his pathway to the grave. By the wild waves plashing wearily The lady bright is kind and good, The paragon of womanhood; And her wedded lord is leal and sure, x Beloved alike of rich and poor, By the wild wavesplashing wearily.
There dwells a fisher on the strand, In a little cdl with a rood of land. With his bonny wife and girlcs and boys’ That climb to his knee with aqdeasant noise, / , By the wild waves plashing cheerily And the lady of the caslTc sighs When she meets the fisherwife's gladdening eyes, And wishes that Heaven to bless her life. Sit with his wife in the glint 0/ the sun. By the wild waves plashing cheerily. Sit with his wife, and his boys and girls,a Dandling the youngest with golden curls, And turns his envious eyes aside And well nigh weeps for all his pride, By the wild waves plashing cheerily. •Td give,” quoth he, “my rank and state, My wealth that pcormen call so great, Could but I have that fisherman's joys, His happy home and his girls and boys, By the wild waves plashingcheerily.

Politeness. It is a graceful hjipit for ch.idren to say to each other, “Will yoh have the goodness?” and “1 thank you.” We don’t Ijke to see prim, artificial children, there are few things we dislike so much as a ininaturc beau or belle. But the habit of a good manners by no means implies affection or restraint. It is quite as easy to say “Please give me a piece of pie.” ns to say, “I want a piece of pic.” The.ideathnt constant politeness: would render social life stiff and ; restrained, springs from a false es tiinate of politeness. True politeness is perfect oas and freed.— It simply consists in treating oth ers just as you would like to be I treated yourself. A r.ei’son who ' nets from this principle will always 1»e said to have “sjjeet pretty ways with her.” It is of some consequence that your daughter should know how to enter and leave a room gracefully, but it is of prodigiously more consequence that she should lie in the halfit of avoiding weatever is disgusting or offensive to others, and of alwsß-s considering their pleasure as well as her own.
The suit of the widow Lyon a gainst Home, the Spiritualist, for the recovery of 33(a);000 obtained from her under “magnetic influence," is progressing in London. The revelations made in court are curious, denoting the progress of the new ritualistic dispensation of rajis. table tips, leg touches, knot ted handkerchiefs, and talk of dead persons.

gam & gtwbli To Prevent Animals Jump* Ing Fences. Various devices have been re sorted to in order to prevent such tresspasses, and especially in regard to sheep, but none have succeeded, or only in a limited degree. Now we have a new one, and if it is not cruel or painful, or will not greatly discommode the animal operated upon, and is a remedy, we can see no objection to employing it. It is to “clip off the eyelashes of the under lids, with a pair of scissors, and the ability or disposition to jump is as effectually destroyed as Sampson's poice/ wastry, the loss of his locks.—■ , 'The not attempt a fence again until the eyelashes are grown.” This fact has been promulgated by that distinguished breeder of cattle, Mr. Samuel Thorne, of Dutchess county, N. Y., who states that he tested it upon a very 1 ireachy pai rof oxen with entire success. He considers a knowledge of the fact of great value to himself, and hopes it wil prove so to others. _ / 2 :
Health of Farmers. There are seven reasons why farmers are healthier than professional men namely: 1. They work more, and develop all the leading muscles of the body. 2. They take their excreise in the open air, and breathe a greater amount of oxygen. 3. Their food and” drink are commonly le s adulterated, and far more simple. 4. They do not overwork their brain as much as industrious profestional men do. . 5. They take their sleep, commonly, during the eyes of darkness, and do not try to turn day into night. . 6. They are not so ambitious and do not wear themselves out so rapidly in the tierce contest of rivalry. 7. Their pleasures are simple less exhausting. A home, however tasteful as to house and lawn, is incomplete without a liberal allotment of ground for gardening .purpose.
Making Soil.—We make soil when we ditch it. Before, it was 1 wet and unreclaimed, fit only fur water-grasses —and in many cases not even these. Now, it is land. I You look upon it, and you think it: almost a miracle it is in farming. 1 such as we want to see more of. j This is the far mer’s praise that he has reclaimed useless soil. It is better than to make new soil, as it | is done iu sandy accessi- , hie to good markets. It relieves ' your land of a cess pool where it is swampy, and removes a danger to cattle. «■ Au eye-sore is also re-1 moved, and land —itis healthy. It will last; but this only when you makeyour ditch well, if covered ; if open, you need not keep it clear —but cover, that is the beauty and the benefit of the thing. Ball our land was underlaid with numerous ditches, laid deep, what a world it would be!—what an increase of I the arable quantity of land what a wonderful increase of its productiveness!— Cor. of Rural World.
To. Stop" the Flow of Blood.— Housekeepers, mechanics, and other-;, handling-' knives, 1 tools and other small instruments, frequently receive severe cuts, from which blood flows profusely, and often endangers life itself. Blood may be ma le to cease o flow ns follows •. Take the fine dust of tea and bind ■ it close to ’he wound—at fill times accessible and easy to be After the bloo 1 has cease 1 to flow, laudanum may be advantageously applied to the wound. Due regard to these instructions would sav» agitation of mind, an ! running for a surgeon, who probably woirid make no better prescription if he were present. A home, however tasteful as to house and lawn, as incomplete without a liberal allotment of ground for gardening purposes.— Much of the domestic comfort of a family is derived from the products of the garden. A lady writes: “In the culture of my children I make much account of the cultivation of flowers. My little daughter is old enough I to take some care of them.
