She gtoet’s Corner. ix a cemeteryT - Here they so softly rest! No trouble heaves their breast, No cares annoy; In this most still retreat, W here peace and beauty meet, And holy joy. Never a fear or pain Can haunt their souls again, Or any wrong. An everlasting sleep! Lasped in a dream too deep For sigh or song. Would I might weep no more; Would I—life’s fever o'er— Were well at rest; Freedom from all life’s foes, An end to end’ess woes; Here with the blest! Wit, Wk-dom, -A shocking thing to think of—a galvanic battery. -The miner is happiest when his triumphs are ore. -Vice stings even in pleasure, but virtue consoles even in our i pain. -True goodness is like the glowworm ; it shines most when no eyes except those of heaven are upon it. -Some one says going to law is mighty cold business; for all you ever get is just-ice, and sometimes you don't get that. -Do not attach yourself to a cru el men; sooner or later you will find him as pitiless for you as he is for others. -A coxcomb asked a barber’s boy, “did you ever shave a monkey?” “No, sir, but if you’ll be pleased to sit down I’ll t-t-try.,’ -A clergyman said in a recent sermon that the path of rectitude had been traveled so little of late years it had completely run to grass. -Ata recontrailroad celebration, the following sentiment was given ; “Our mothers —the only faithful tenders who never misplaced a switch.” -The greatest thoughts, it has been said, spring from the heart; but the maxim is fir more true with respect to the noblest actions. -We are told that “like cures like.” We wish our clever homeopaths would invent a much more valuable system to society by which “dislikes should cure dislikes.” -Advice to parents—The child’s mind is like a virgin sheet of let-ter-paper ; and its address in afterlife will depend entirely upon the way in which you direct it. -Such is the blessing of a benevolent heart that, let the world frown as it will, it cannot possibly bereave it of all happiness, since it can rejoice in the prosperity of I others, -The chief secret of comfort li.es in not suffering trifles to vex one, and in prudently cultivating an undergrowth of small pleasures, since very few great ones are let on long leases. -Do not meddle with what does not concern you. Recollect that when the hounds are furiously fighting for a morsel of meat if they see a jackall pass they set together in pursuit of him. -An exchange says: “Babies resemble wheat in many respects. First—neither are good for inucli until they arrive at maturity. Second—both are bred in the house, and are also the flower of the family. Third—both have to be cradled. Fourth—both-are generally well threshed before they are done with.”
-Not many years since, in West Plymouth, it used to be the custom for the schoolmaster to “board round” among the families of his pupils so as to save expense. Sometimes,.of course, the days did not come out quite even there would be eight days and a ha’f at one place and nine at another. One man, who was notorious for his meanness, just before the schoolmaster began his dinner said to him, “Mr.—, I suppose by rights your time is up just about half way through this dinner.— That's as near as I'kin calculate, pretty close. But 1 don’t wish to be small about it, and you kin eat just about as much as you would do for ordimary.”
