After gaining the mother’s] esnsent, the n< xt thing was to tie the ] knot; the next thing, furnish a bouse, and take little Lottie wife home; next thing in order was to hire a servant—then, of course, the domestic wheel began to turn. One day, his lordship came in, and said! . •’Bridget, where is my Lottie?” “Out in tho yard, at play with one of her schoolmates.” replied Bridget. Husband, in all the fullness of ids heart, rushed out in the yard to participate in the fun, but was greatly set back by his “little ] Lottie”saying; “Go Rway. you old toolfo we don’t want you in the play.”— San' Francisco Californian.
A Massachusetts Paper on Zacluriah Chandler. The Worcester, Massaobnsetts, Gazette save: . . Senator Chandler, of Michigan, is a rich man, a very rich naan; indeed lie is said to be one of tho rid est n> nin the Senate. As such Le is doubtl s entitled to respect, yea, exceeding great respect. But we confess that we are hardl» prepared to go quite as far .n oui reverence for wealth as he evidently thinks the people of the United State,; ouelit to go. In a recent debate in the Ziaxreie on ih« P «y«—« -f vclU i| l ' TV revenue collectors, Mr. Cnandler took the Secretary of the '1 reasury to Wbk for his agency in their appointment. He stigmatiz d him as a pauper, and ol course as being undeserving the confidence ofthe people. He came to ington, Mr. Chandler said, “from a h * ® ,-bank out in Indiana, and loon a clei ship of eorne kind which pa d him about; 53,000. That was twice as much cs he was worth. He wouldn’t give him iic.e than SI,OOO to be a clerk in his bank or in bis dry goods store in Detroit.” Now it seems almost incredible that a Senator ofthe United States slr.uld have permitted binwelf, even in the heat of debate, to have used such language as this toward r.n officer of the Govt rnment. We are no admirer of Mr. McCulloch s pol ties. We believe that when he undertook to advocate ‘.he President's pid icy, he undertook a work to which he was utterly incompetent, and his mistake to the whole country. But because he has proved himself to be a i short sighted politician on the reconstruction issue, it does not follow that he is .Oj be reproach for his want of wealth, as H not to be rich in Washington was a crime. Had he been the keeper o a dry ■ goods store in Detroit or the founder of a, wildcat bank in Michigan, had be spec-
ulated in nine logs on borrowed money, and made a fortune, be would doubt ess, in Mr. Chandler’s estimation, have been a very acceptable man indeed.
