■ HY IU A L y vv xi) RAISE LARGE ORO PS 0 F POTATOES. It is desirable, not only to get the beat varieties for seed, but to know bow to plant them and to raise the largest and best crop. The method I pursue, and which pays better, far bailer, than any of the old eys'ema generally practiced, is as follows: 1. Io the fall plow deeply and subsoil p’ow, in all IS to 20 inches in depth. 2. In early spring, plow and subsoil across the winter furrows, harrow and roll. 3 Mark out, as for corn, 3 feel apart each way, open iha farrows 8 inches deeep. 4. At the intersection drop a whole potmen, the largest you have, and spread upon it a handful (about 43 bushels per acre) of a compost tn in are of eight parts of wool ashes, four of bone phosphate of lime, four of fine ground plaster, two of finely slacked Time, an 1 one of salt; or, if preferred, 3 ounces of artificial fertilizer per l.ill. Then cover, roll, and spread 1,090 lbs. per acre of good artifienl fertilizer. 5. As soon as the young plants etart, run the cultivator close to and between, t>ut not ov< r them, iu each direction. Afterwards, and before the weeds come up, cultivate to'.h ways, with Knox’s horse hoe—so arranged aa to cut as shal'ow as possible, and keep the surface entirely flat. Repeat this, at short interv.ls, three times. Then hand hoe three times, still keeping a fla’ surface. Atiow no tilling at any time, nor any wreds to grow. 6 As soon as the tops are dead, dig in clear dry weather with heavy five fined diguing forks; spread, cover to dry and s ore in cool, dirk, dry, niry cellar, spr-ad ; g half a pint of freshly slacked lune in powder on each bushel of pota lues.
7. G-i‘her and compost and dry tops, f r application t.<x'. atUutn, lb.n plow and subsoil plow as before, for next year's crop. Tlte lollnwinj; are the advantages of ti is system of cultivation: 1. No possible entire failure of the crop. 2. No rot in healthy variaties. 3. Tite largest yield the eoii and varieties ate capable of. 4 The lurgfit port! >n of Urge potato s. 5. No degeneracy of varieties, but coriiaueJ improvement. C. No necessity f>r rotation of crops; the potato*) can thus be grown almost indefinitely upon the same land, with per haps, st long intervals, a seeding of ciov. rto ntr.in’hin the supply of vegetable fibre In the soil. 7. No loss by the Ute spring frosts. If die earlj growth is cut cIJ. the dor mant ey s will grow and the crop be s .veil. < The greatest economy o f culture and harvesting. 9. Tt.e highest tabic quality of potato. It the ra iU->ids of the compost can rot be obtained, lop-dr’ss heavily tn the fall, i ft-f plowing, wii’t h-irn manure, but never u it in the season of planting. It increase the crop, but tends to engender dis-.a«e, especially in the season. N>velty in Tanning.—A tann : ry has! been located in Rockford, 111, in which is employed the patented process by exhausting the nir from the vat. The tan ting is ski! to be accomplished in twelve; hours, and t’- *t of sheep skin in fiffeop minutes. The weight of lea her from a giv<n weight of It-tUs is ten pet cent greater than by the ordinary process, nnd the cost of the works is but teu p»r c-’ut t! at of the old. It is also claiio ed that th« leather is better; but this point ern or ly b» determined by wear.
Mrs Fr>=ihnt Johnson appeared at the rec- piion f-r the fi st time.
