AGRICULTURAL department. Wash fur Trees. We have no great faith in the efficacy of either washing ar scraping trees—but m some persons have, a few words on ; the subject may not be useless. If wash- * ing is determine! upon, the best material in our knowledge is common soft soap mixed with water until it is of a consistency ot cream. It may be applied in the month of July; it will have a tendency to destroy the eg«» ol insect which are then deposited-«i lire ba'rk aud about the roots of trees. This wash will also ba found effectual in removing moss aqd oilier parasitical productions. A sufficient amount of p« t ash is containedfra the soap to accomplish these ends, aid yet not enough to injure the bark of ths tree, and as it is of veg# <- ble origin, it is more congenial to the tree than lime, and is always to be preferred. It does not close the pores of the baik as lime does, bnt leaves them unobstructed and open to atmospheric influences, and in a state of vfgerous and perfect health. It has long been used by wchardists and gardeners, and has never been known to injure anv fiuit tree, when made and ap plied as above directed.— Selected. Rabbits Injuring Trees. Mix equal naris ot pine tar and fish or neat’s foot Oil. With a light paddle thinly covered with the mixture, tap lightly and rapidly ou two, three or four sides of the tree, according to siae, leaving little dots the size of a pea about two inches apart and two feet high. It will not ap parently injure the tree, and will protect them over winter. Half a gill is sufficient for from fifty to one hundred trees. Try it. A wash of strong soap s ids mixed with sifted wood ashes to the consistency of whitewash, and applied with a brush it> a dry day in .spring will make all right again, and improve the trees. Try bwtlk Some people adopt the plan of feeding rabbits to prevent their doing mischeil—such may try the following: Just before snow falls, go through the orchard, cu'« iintroffa few water-shoots or sprouts, strsgg ing and crossing limbs, and letting them lie under the trees. The rabbila will effectually bark them if cot buried in snow. Or w,t.b apples or turnips, coax them ito box trans. The boys like the eport of catching, and "folks" of eating them. — Ohio Farmer. Tub Milch Cow, —So far from trying to see how little f vod we can subsist a milch cow on, the abject should be to see how much we make her eat. The cow should be regarded as a machine for the manufacture of milk. Feed, thertfoie, so as to sharpen the ap-,elite and induce the animal to eat freely. It you have a long row to feed, put a small forkful before the first and so on to each as you go along. By the time you get to the end, the first. may have eaten all up clean, and be wait ing for more. Begin the same way and go round again and again if necessaiy. 1 Put a large feeding be'ore a cow at once, and it would not be eaten with halt the refish, and some of it might be left.— Mass. Ploughman Raising Sweet Potatoes —A writer in the Country ffentleman says:—“The potatoes should be planted by the first of June. The soil should be warm, dry, and sandy. It should also be rich, Sub soiling is said to be very beneficial.— Throw the land into high r d_es, by turning furrows together with a horse plow, making three and a half feet apart from centre io centre. One plant should be '■ set in a place, from fifteen to eighteen inches apart in the ridge, Wet 'he roots and press the earth firmly around them. The stems of the lower haves should ' be covered, so that they may sprout, if cut by worms or frost. Il is said that the sweet potato will be ar transplanting . with less moisture in the ground thio most other plants require.” , 1 Large vs. Small Potatoes.—Henry Tilden writes in the Prairie Farmer:— ’ As to ibe size and quality of seed I would , as soon use the poorest and smalles’ nub 1 bins of corn for seed, as to use small po- , tatoes. I save the largest and b> «t and charge my seed occasionally. Last year I received a barrel of potatoes from Michigan which contained two bushels of Peach Blows and one-half busht 1 of Pinkeyes. The Peach Blows were vry much superior to the old stock, and yielded 110 bushels or 55 fold. Diakrhixa in Sheep —Take rosio and eak, pound them together, and feed reghrly and liberally, .tad succts* is sure.
