THE EAGLE. OWVttXAI PAPEI pF THE OOUNTY. LOCAL & MISCELLANEOUS, FRIDAY, April 6, 18C6. yull Particulars of the Attempt to Rob »he County Treasury—Arrest of the fbirglars. We made a simple statement last week •f an unsuccessful attempt to rob the •onnty Treasury, but at the time was unable to enter into particulars which we now propose to do. Mr, Niblick on opening his office on Wednesday morning of last week, discov ered that various articles of office furniture had changed places during the night, end r»! course the first thing inspected was the safe, but he soon ascertained it had not been Opened. The next discovery •cade was that one of two sheets ot delinquent paper furnished by the Auditor the evening previous, had boon mutilated by tearing an irregular strip from the lower poition of the sheet. Ol course this sheet wns c .refully pre-erved. boon after be discovered that h.s gold yer. was missing, and on going to the back window he found a pied ot maroon colored cotton velvet lying on ti e tloor, which was cut full of Ini s. The bar across the w ndow shutters was displaced, and the lower corner of one of the abutters cut for the purpose of inserting a lever to pry open the shutters. On opening the shutters the tracks of the burglars were plainly visible in the light snow which had fallen the day previous and afforded conclusive evidence that but two peisons were engaged in the affair. At this time no further discoveriss weie made, but some two hours afterwards, while mentioning the ass dr to some friends, a further investigvion was suggested. On examining carefully an irregular piece cf heavy sheet iron, some five or s x Inches square was discovered behind ihe life, which on being removed from it biding place proved to be a portion ol tin- | • afo. The book case and papers were I •hen removed lioin the top of the sale, I which at once revealed the secret of the • midnight visit. The burglars had site ceeded in cutting a hide through the out side plates, after which they removed the ■aomposition which brought them to the burglar proof vault. This they attempted to penetra'e with a drill, but all th* ir iffoits proved abortive. Foiled in their undertaking they, as i.sr a.- possible, carefully repine d every thing as they found it sod evacuated the pieniis'S. On searching careuilv 3 sledg* which alti rw»rdproved to have bon taken from 'he black smith shop of John Bailey, and a dov iron taken from D. 0 Jackson's sawmill was found under a box adjacent to the effio*.
About tl is time Ernst Titus, who the day previous had b<.en op to Henry Steele's reached the scene and reported that two Bu.-picioti? strangers came there st,d wished to trade a 'in bucktt for some provisions. Mrs. Sl'ele uavo them something to eat in excl ai.g • tor the bucket, end put the eatab'es into a haversack o! (ink Colored colored velvet which thr-v jro luci d lor the purp. b". Mr. Niblick then showed him the piece of Velvet t and in l e office ns above staled, wl ich Titus ester ex mination pronounced ■ xactly the 'olor ol the haversack he had seen with the two s'rangers the day previous. An • xaminntioii of the sledge rev< a’ed the teoi that the velvet I.a I been used as a cushion on the held of the chisels to diminish the noise of their operations. Ti ttis also reported that they had occupied tho school house <n the pl ir.k road above ■ own, known as tha 101 l gate school house, Tuesday and Wednesday night ; that Tuesday afternoon Mr. Steele and himsell had visited them and found them sitting ly the store, with their boots off, which they had nicely greased; that they were there when lie came to town; that he •topped a moment and noticed their boots muddy and wet as if they had been out during the night. This was deemed evi dence sufficienl to warrant their arrest. The Sheriff soon g...'hered a squad and •tarted in pursuit. Just n“* or ,* teaching the school house they met A*." Steele, who went back with them to the sc.i' >o ' .house, but the birds had flown, and w,'.ile the Sheriff and bis posse continued the J urstiit Mr. Steele examined the room, -.hut found nothing except a small piece ol paper, which he brought to town and on comparison found it exactly fitted a sec tion of the torn sheet before mentioned Hero was another clue, and immediately upon discovering this additional evidence, another party was started with instructions to use every effort to effect their capture. In the mean time the Sheriff and bis posse found their trail on the Recovery road, which they followed as rapidly as circumstances would admit, frequently hearing of them along the route. They kept the Recovery road to Salem church where they turned west to Alexander Pogue's; thence south about a quarter of a mile where they left the road and passed through the improvement of Joseph Shrull. When they left the road the Sheriff and H- Shackley continued on the road, while the remainder of tl e pursuers kept the trail. While crossing this improvement both parties discovered each other nearly smiultaneou-iy, when ths turglari. immediately increased their pac , About the s mie time Mr. S rull and John tiaoket discovered both pardr? and ktirmiying what was g sng 4>n Shroff •aiivi hit gun and joined in the pursuit.
The burglar* ns soon as possible i o under cov. r of the woods and were mo. ment iiily lost sight of, but unfortuna.ely lor them their course was right in th • ilinct'on of lip- 811 riff who so..n discovered them and Immedia'ely gave thalarm. His shouts were h'-ard by the | other par i-s. wno imniediat. ly •oim-d in 1 tl o dtr.cu. a ndteated by the so , « ur ; rounded them. Driven first from one D irty back to the other, they were finally pressed so c.osely that there- whs no way of escaping. During these man- uvers I several shot were fired by the pursuers | but without effect, the burglars mean while flourishing their revolvers an! making extravagant threats of shooting, boasting of their bravery and expressing a determination not to yield. But a liitl.n flection convinced them of the folly of resistance, when they gave up their arms and were escorted to town and confined in j--iil The citizens of the neighborhood who had joined in the pursuit followed the trail of the burglars back to where they were first discovered with a view of find ing any thing that had been cast aside during the pursuit. At different points along the line of their flight various ar icles were discovered, first in importance was the missing pen and holder, the point being w iapp> d in a fragment of the delinquent paper, then a lot of stone cutter’s tools, a dirk knife, several articles of provision, a paper of powder, memor ind uni book, etc At the proper place we omitted mentioning the fact that during the pursuit John King picked up a Ceil of miner’s luse. The prisoners were taken from the j’-il on Fridy and arr ipned before Esc. I Grim, when they g ve their names ns , Theodore Demos an W ilkarn H Cook. The testimony elici- d on the examination showed that the parties who intered the Treasurer's offi-e also entered Mr. Shrader’s Marble Shop, an 1 John Bailey’s Blacksmith Shop. The Auditor also tes- , tilled as to the delinquent paper and the sweral pieces were produced and exactly fitted the mutilated beet-. The Treasurer identified his pen and tlie circumstance under which il was found were also I proven; so al>o with Mr. Shrad r's too!*, I ore of which had his name countersunk j in it; Mr. Bailey testified also to his j sledge. The testimony which we have i hnr.lly outlined, was sufficient to cleaily establish three distinct eaets of burglary. They w- re held to bail in the sum ol $2.5 >0 each, and are now is jv.l awaiting ih. ir trial. Where they reside is unknown, but as | C ok has written to Richmond, Indiana, it is supposed rtftl he at Last has iitends tin re.

Blue Creek Ahead —Henry Stacy and Joseph Foreman, who brought ir. tin returns of tha Democratic Primary tion of Blue Creek township, report that the Republicans thoroughly canvas-ed the township before the election and claimed they would elect their township ticket by eighteen majority, but they were sadly disappointed, as the entire Democratic ticket was elected by a majority of el-ven. The boys advise the li-publicans tc g-t a new sieve before they attempt an jth-r canvass of the township and sitting out ol voters, as the old one proved un reliable. We are of the same opinion and hope the Democrats of Blue Creek will assist them in getting it, and in making another canvass, as the more they figure on these questions the worse they will feel.
