On Thursday morning the County Treasurer, Jesse Niblick, on opening his office found that an attempt had been made to break open the safe. The rear window of the office had been forced, through which an entrance wa« effected. The safe was a new one of Douds, Mig neals & Urban’S manufao tire, and an at tempt was made to cut a hole in the top over the money vault. A hole some six ■ Inches square was ent through the out»ide plates, which was '.he amount o. dam- , a light snow on the ground. ; and from the tracks mule it is supposed ■ there was but two p M >ns engaged in the affair. And as the tools wete birrowed for the occasion, it is supposed th it the j attempted burglary was m ide by some one o »ar home, ns a professional safe breaker I wouli not have attacked one of Do Id & Co.’s safes, with such appliances as was found in the vic nity. Since the above was written, J. 11 Bramtrkamp and Washington Pyle were; arrested, bit we are id -d to tie able to Male that the boys furnishel a satisf y tory statement of their whereabouts on that night, when they w-re released from , custody. Two suspicious strangers, .that luv. been occupying the school I. 1 1on th plank road above town, for several nights, are now strongly snspieioned, an 1 a largposse are after them. I Meeting of the Agricultural Society. ; Pursuant to previous notice the (rien s 'of Agriculture met at the Court House, on Saturday, March 24th The meeting was organized on motion of G. A Dentby appointing F. A. Jelleff Chairman. On motion of J R. Miller, A. J Hill was appointed Secretary. The Chairman stated the obj ct of the meeting was io orginize a county Agricultural Society, and the call for this meeting was made at the request of farmers of the county.
A somewhat protracted discussion then I ensued as to the best mode of organzing in which most of those present took ! part The result of their deliberations j wis to conclude to organize by a joint) stock company, or in other w -rds th it the i necessary finds to prepare the ground, buildings, etc., necessary for the exhibition be raised by subscription, and that certific it-.s cd stock be issued in proper lion Co the amount paid by each individual. And lh.-t an accurate account bj kept of receipts and expenditure l , and in case of n cessity of raising funds that it be raised by subscription or by assess i tag stockholders, and in the event of the receipts exceeding expenditures a dividend be made of the surp!u-> among the stockholders. 0 i motion of D. Sul-biker a Oom mittee w is appointed to dra t a Constiiu tio.i an I rules for the Adami County Agricultural Society, consisting of the following prsoiis: D. S.ulabiker, E. Wood -, R iV in i is, A. Cr ibs, 1> J. R e nd A J. Hill, and time given until next ■•'a urday to report. The meeting th n aljiurned un'il Siturday, M irch 31st, one o’clock P, M. A J. HILL, Secretary. Arre t of Francis Pio. —On Situr -lay n it Francis Pio, who wis one ol the parties engaged in steali ig Mr. Schooler's horses returned horn •. The facts soon become known to the proper authorities, and abmi II o'clock Sheriff) Stulls and posse started to pay him a visit. They succeeded in arresting him without difficulty. He failed to give the i require i bail, 81000, mi l is now in j til; awaiting his trial. The horses were stolen by Pio and John La Font which is an alias, his true name being Saliff, and who was the principal in the affair. They di In>t go north s was at first supposed, but passe;! through town and started lor D iyton via. of St. Miry’s, where they were arrested, as our readers ar.- alieidv inf -rmed, but il.ere being no evidence rt hand the . were ) discharged before the parties who left | lu-re to identify th-rn reach'd Dayton, i After they were released they went to i Bufia'o N. Y., where they parted com- ! p -ny, Pio returning with the intention, ns ' he says, of giving himself up. F- om all ace >un s Saliff is an old offender, an I a perfect de-perado We hope h- will not long remain at large, but ; wil r- c; ive that punishment he no doubt 1 richly deserveß, The rtrong-st part of the affair is, that Pio, who has heretofore bore a good character, should be induced to sted I.is father in law’s horses, especially when it is known that his wife is nn only child, and in the natural course of events would Lave ultimately fallen heir Io his entire prop'-rty. It is too much like ste ilinu one’s own property, if such a thing could • be don-'.
Committed —On Saturday list, Joe! Hudson was arraigned be ore Esq. Grim, on a charge ol Dying in a supply of p rk. the properly of Timothy Coffee. II- was held to bail in the sum of three hundred dollars, which he fa le 1 to secure, wh n he was furnished quarters with Sheriff! Stults. Agricultural Society* The call for a re-orginiz ition o! the Adams county Agricultural Society, on i Saturday, owing to bad roads an 1 weather was not largely attended, but the right tpirit was manifested, and wa feel sure ) that the Society will bs pertnauen'ly ori oaniz-d at the n- xt meeting. We believe that our fann-rs are about to awaken to a just sense of their duty, and are i about to take the matter into their hands land go to work with a will—a will that will effect a permanent agricultural orIganization, and we believe that the | grounds will yet be prepared, an! that i ihis lall we will have an Exhibition that i will be a credit to the people, and gen ■ orally promote the Agricultutffl interests : of the county.
Progressive.—Adams county has laid aside a great many of its old fogy ideas, some of which it might havo retained with credit to itself, as a careful perusal of our columns (of the last few weeks will show. We have no ambition to pub li. h a Police Gazette, but we ara compelled to set before our readers the bill of fare in the way of local items th.lt the ! community furnishes. Crimiod viola- : t ons of the law have heretofore been ! comparatively unknown, but of late a i stiange iufatuAlioa seems to havo filled ' the minds of many and has lead them asiray. Right here we will correct an error. We have frequently stated there was not a vac. nt room in town, which was incorrect, as there has been no inmates of tlw county jail for a long time, until the prese&t week. The stakmen',
I however, is good now. We are tearing down and building up, improvements are in contetnpl -lion on every hand. Forward seems to be the watchword, but with our prosperity crime is making gigintio strides, and unless something is done to put a stop to evil practices, the county jail without an inmate will be ll*e , exception, not the rule. Crime will sooner I or later be punished at the hands of jus lice, and offenders should take warning if they wish to avoid county j ids, which are but outposts of our penitentiaries. Mire Thieving.— A short timo since a lady while making some purchase*, mo men'.arily left her pock't bo.-k, containing some thirteen dollars, on the counter of a store in town, but when wanted to settle her bill it was missing. List week, a half bushel of clover seed was stolen from the amc pl ace by some light fingered rascal.
For reasons best known to ourselves, we will n il locate the pl ies or give names. On Wednesday night an attempt was ; made to force an entrance into the store , lof J <fc A. Crabs. The burglars bored a couple of hoi the wind w shtri r with a two inch auger, but failed to effect aa entrance. It is supposed they become alarmed, fearing that their enterprise had aroused other parlies, when they decamped without successfully carrying out their undertaking. Z2T Gold last week was quoted as low as §1.27. As a natural consequence there is quite a panic in the dry goods market in the east. In fact it is not confined ent rely to the eas', as we no.ice our own merchants, with perhaps few exc’p'tons, are selling dry-goods at cost. C<lo Weather.—We have, for the last lew weeks, h i 1 unusual cold weather far the season. Winter seems lobe lingering in the lap of) spring, loth to ) depart. Doling the wcei past, we have I had woather appropriate to midwinter, [with the usual accompaninents of snow, i ice an 1 every oth' r ingredient intermini g.'ed that usually com s un lar the head lof “disagreable" weather. ) Marriage and Celibacy. i n essay <>r warning and in- .
