Causes of Sudden Death. Very few of the sudden deaths which «re said to arise from disease if the heart, do really arise from th«t cause. To ascertain the real origin of sudden deaths, an experiment has been tried in Europe, and reported to a scieiiV.iL: congress held io Strasbourg. Sixty-six cases of sudden death Were made the subject of a thorough po*t mortem examination; in these crises on’y two were found who had died from disease of the heart. Nine out of s : xiy-six had died from apoplexy, while there were fortyaix cases of congestion of the lungs; that is, the were so full of blood they could not work, there nit being room enough for a sufficient quantity of air to enter to suport life. The causes that produce cong-stions of the lungs are—cold »eet, tigiit clothing, Costive bowels, fitting still until chilled alter b ing warmed by labor or a rapid w .lk, going too sud inly from a close lieaud r ill into the cul l air, especially after speaking, and sudden depressing news operating upon the blond. These causes of sudden death being known, an av 'dance of them may serve to lengthen many v.duable lives, which wou! 1 otherwise be )a«t under the verdict heart complaint. That disease is supposed to be inevitable and incurable; hence many m-.y n t tate the pains they would to avoid sud den death, it they knew it lay in their power.
