A Bit of Romixce —A lady living in * ibis city, separated from hei husband by ibe vKMsitades of the war, at last reached the conclusion that he was dead. She. patted, piece by piece, with her jewelry, then with her laces and finer clothing, und finally was driven almost to absolute distress. The other day she received a', letter from a gentleman in Mississippi, ■ informing her that her husband had late-. !y died there, Searing a fortune of orer i 860,000, to which she was the sole heiress. A check for 8100 accompanied the letter. Her hasbind having enlisted j ia the army, was discharged on account of illness and, oaring to the unsettled . state of the country, he preferred to remain in the extreme South until the close I of the war. While there be became en- • gaged in various speculations, and raids large amounts of money. He expected to rejoin Lis family as toon as peace was declared. He invested his funds in cot- j ton, and had just disposed of it when death closed his career. He had written many letters to his wife, Lut none of them, reached her. She departed, i .e&lerday, for Natchez, to realize the j competence that awaits her.— philadel- 1 pkia Gazette. _ cyA coxfirmku bachelor uses the foil- i owing argument against matrimony: Calico is a great piompter of laziness. If young m n wish to accomplish any thing of moment, either of head or of hand, they must keep clear of the institution, entirely. A pair of sweet lips, a pink waist, swelling chest, a pressure of two delicate hands, will do.as much to : unhinge a man as three fevers, the measles, a large sized whooping cough, a pair of lock jaws, several hydrophobias, the doctor's bi 1. jswlt married couple went to Niagra on a visit and the gentleman, in order to convince his dear that he was as brave as he was gallant, resolved to go down into the “Cave of Winds.” She of; course, objected: but finding that he was; determined, affectionately requested him to leave his pocketbook and watch behind. Max coming home one night I rather late, a little more than “half seas over,” feeling thirsty procured a glass of, water and drank it. In doing so he j swallowed a small ball of silk that lay m ' the bottom of the tumbler, the end of the • thread catching in his teeth. Feeling, something irr his month, and not know \ ing what it was lie began to puli at the end’ and the little ball unwinding, he ; soon had several yard),of thread in his | h tud, and stiff no end, apparent y. Terrified, he shouted at the top of his voice: | “Wife! wife! I say, come here! lam all i unraveling.” ZrT Some of our religious exchanges tell a story about a woman being relieved from speechless grief by a hymn. e have known a number of the sex to be stron, ]y affe:ted and greately benefited by bims before this. C3"An exchange gives reasons for not. publishing a poetic effusion’ as follows: “The rhythm sounds like puinkins rolling over a barn floor while some lines appear to have been measured with a yard stick, and others with a ten-foot pole.*' C-g-The Richmond Tiiitet say of waterfalls: “We have watched these phen omens carefully anl they have been growing larger every Sunday and the tails of the horses of the young 'vdies' pipes are growingsmaib-r.” Damages for liein; Tarred and Feathered. In the action tried before tha Supreme Judicial court at Saltm, Mass., Inst week, Mr. Geo. W Stone recovered damages to the amount of >'B6o, fur injuries received at the bands of Wm. Seger and other citizens of Swampscott, on the morning of the 15th of April last, the day after the Ks.-msmation of President Lincoln. I', appeared, that the plaintiff who was a bouse painter, was at work at tlae time in Swampscott, au 1 was called upon by a number of persons, rabauitants of Swampscott, who told him that he Lad been beard to express his joy at the news of the President's death, and his regret that it had no; occurred three years before. Av be failed to make satisfactory retraction or explanation, he was taken from the house, marched some three quarter? of a mile to the post office and there tarred and feathered. He was then taken to the Town Hall, where a convention of teachers was being held, and finally was placed in a boat and dragged about a mile. There was also some evidence tend ing to snow that be w ,s kicked and struck, and that other violence was offered hitn. But upon this the testimony was conflicting. The damages were laid at twentyfive thousand dollars. ta* There is a rumor in circulation in Louisville that « tremesidnu l - qiiAßtfly o! powder has accumulated and is still accumulating ia Cairo, and that commissaries’,quartermasters’ trad rrmrfrr.T 1 , s tores are gathered there for a hundred thousand men. The rumor says the store have been ordered South, but the powder," so.far as known, remains in Cairo. W» know not what it means. It may be that Vncla Sam has some idea of teaching Maximilian how to light, or asking him to leave the continent, backed up by a very forcible argument. The policy of sending a Minister to the Jutrez Government in Mexico, goes to nhow that our jGovernment is unfriendly to the Meriear. Empire.
