MotionExpi riroc® has proved that mutton for farmers' use is the cheapest of all meats.! The co*t of keeping sheep is more than' balanced by the fl-ece that is generally taken from them; and especially may this be said cf sheep in mild climates, where ; the farmer is not compelled to fodder but a small portion of the year. Another important item is the yearly increase. From it, if he desires, the farmer can supply bis table with muiton through the year; we would, therefore, advise saving the lambs, and kill, as tarj as may be necessary, the older sheep. , It is also a very convenient meat for the larder. A farmer's family can very i readily consume a sheep before it wit! spoil, while this cannot be done with beef, or other animals of a large size, without' adopting some method of preservation.! Besides, the time and labor employed iaj killing and dressing a sheep is but little compared with what is necessary for large | animals. Hence, as a matter of eonveaiance and economy, we advise every far-i mer to keep a flock of sheep. } That it is a healthy article of food, needs neither arguments nor facts to prove, Wc know that pork is the chief meat of farmers; but when we consider the cost of making it, as compared with mutton, and the results obtained in the profita accruing therefrom, we think farmers generally will give mutton the preference. — Setting Tire*. It is said that tires can be kept tight on wheels without coming loose until they wear out, by soaking the felloes of the wheels in linseed oil, after the tire 3 are, put on, which is done in this way: Pro- j cure a ca»t iron box at some foundry, or j a deep sheet iron pan, ol a length »B>di depth suitable for the purpose, in which put the linseed oil; then place it over the j fire till the oil 13 brought to a boiling heat, i and no hotter, for if 100 hot it will burn j the wood. The wheel should now be sus-; pended on a stick, so that it will revolve, j and the felloes be immersed in the oil, ] each soaking an hour. The wooed of which the felloes are made should fee we'l seasoned and dry at th. time of; using, or it will not absorb the oil; when! wood is prepared in this way it is impervious to w_.ter, and lasts much longer than it otherwise would. The above will not be likely to meet' with favor from blacksmiths and wheel- j wrights, as it is for their interest, the one to reset tires, and the other to make re- ■ pairs; but the farmer will readily perceive the advantages of adopting this method of preparing his wheels, which does away witu the necessity for reselling the tireg Daniel Webster if Living Would Ilave Keen a Democrat. The lion. George Ticknor Curtis made a speech in Brouklvn ou the evening of the 31 instant, from which we made Ibis striking extract: In all the early part of my life I was a political follower of Daniel Webster. Tiie ►chool which Lb trained the yonng men who came under his influence and really gave themselves to Lis teachings, was entirely inconsistent with any sympathy or co operation ia any sectional party; and it was only a short time befire bis death that the tendencies of a large part of the Northern Whigs to convert themselves into a sectional party began to appear. But the signs of this change did appear, and Mr. Webster saw and comprehended their full import. lie meant to warn me, as !.e dal others, against them; and the manner in which lie did it, iu ray case, I can never forget. The scene was in that plaid" furnished apartment, his own chamber, in the large house at Marshfie’d, Dow so memorable, and the time was three days before his death. Beneath tii, 3 window, on a tittle artificial lake, there rode always a suiaii boat at anchor, w ith an American flag at its mast head, so placed that his eye? could rest upe-u it, if light sufficed, as he closed them a' night, and could open on it with the dtwn. Beyond the Inks slie.chej the great farm which he so loved to cultivate, lIiCU die ioW Swldl ftftli the OC» hD. Culling me to his bedside I by my Christian name, he s°id; “The! \\ hig cin lidate will not be elected. You love your couutry, and you think its welfare involved in Whig success. This has been -o; but let me waru you, as you love \ iur country, so give no countenance to a sectional geographical party. The' Whigs, alter this election, will break up, and upon the ruins of our p»rly a sectional party will arise. The stability of the Union will h rsafter depend upon the D.-.aoaracy. * XiT Sruxevv w.t.
