• -. ..fc. ■£.- — I DESOLATION. B. F, Taylor, in a recert letter 10 the Chicago Journal, points cat the signification of the word .' ‘desolation’ as follows: Your readers do not know tho meaning <if the word ‘desolation,’, from anythin!they find in lexicons but it is legibly written and terribly defined along the faces of all these regions, as upon a page. To this blessed sun, that does so much for you. gar lens nnko no) answer and fields are dumb; orchards blossom in loneliness around deserted dwelling*; the winding path to the spring has grown diin: flowers, once pets of the household are safe from the little hands of, children that shall a, vet them no more. Two Sundays ago had you strolled beyond the picket line to a certain point where Mission Ridize bends away to the south, ■ yon would h ive come upon an old ; standing ‘whi re once a garden sm led,’ the ruined, fence-le-s ground lx ing blank and bare, I a a i lively m orning and the I ■■ ' t out he ■ a lure painaui.y, ; ,s . i _...■ .. i'c hold, the orchard, standing like broken ranks after a battle. You strike upon the dopr and it returns a hollow sound like a clod upon a coffin lid. And yet the birds, brave in the loneliness, sang all the same, A poor old horse was feebly grazing - near by. and a min sat upon the ground by the angle of the wall, reading. A few words told the story; that man was once the head of the vanished household; of little'farm there had once been more than enough t|say ‘ours.’— A son whom he h id educated became principal of the academy at, R. m ?. was conscripted and his fate I unknown. Stripped of all, garner i emptv, fields unkempt, little band wandered away; and now he came ; th it pleasant morning, on a lone-, ly pilgrimage, to linger out the day around what was die very cenotaph, the empty burial place, of a dear old home. Os how much tender and delicate sentiment those ; scattered and strown inmates were possessed. I cannot tell. Probably not much: and it was better so , for if God does not always ‘temper tho wind to the shorn lamb, he somtimes gifts them with tough endurance.

Lincoln in Chicago,—The intelligence on Wednesday of the nomination of Lincoln at B.iltim re fell dead upon the public sense in this city, the attempt at a ratification meeting list evening was a still more mortifying failure.— It was indeed a most signal failure. The meeting was held in theopen air, but the people prent would not have filled Bryan H ill; and the proceedings were as spiritless as the crowd was meagre Ihe affair might have been fairly mistaken for a funeral occasion, which it resembled far more th in a joyous opening of a Presidential campaign. The Fremont party can do better. Let them try. — [Chi. Times. Eight steamboats have been burned at New Orleans within a short time.
