This regiment has the reputation of being one of the m st excellent tn the manual of arms, bayonet exercise and school of battalion o' any of the Western regiments, and has passed through, probably, as many great battles. It was originally, organized at the commencement of the war with Major General Lew . Wallace as its Colonel. in three month- sen ice. Its next engagment was that of a detachment of only thirteen scouts of the Zouaves, under Corporal Hays, who attacked two companie- of rebel cavarly near Kelly’s Island killing twcnt' -three of them and inortaliy wounding seven losing bit one man, iho was baj .. after being taken prisoner, By a forced march of twenty-five, miles per day they joined I’attcrecn At the first engagement at Falling Waters a mai . • ed with his arnivt .ward Winchester, thence to ChardsH vn and; Harper's Ferry. Crossing over to Donelson, they made an enviable reputation io th; daring charge upon the enemy s works, with the Eighth Missouri, on the 16th of February 1862. Moving up the Tennessee river with the rest of Grant's victor-»us army at ( 'rump's Landing they drove the enemy's cavalry from Adamsville to Pur.lv.
