THE CRI>H OF THE COTTON FAMINE-PASSED : From late English papers we learn that I the crisis of the cotton famine has been I passed in compantive safety whereat,, i very, properly, there is no little amount, iof congratulating among our English I cousins, not only with the heroism with I which the laboring classes have endured their sufferings, but the promptness with which the wealthier people have responded to call- lor relief. ’I he number of families thrown out of employment, as soon as the close of the cotton trade began to affect the manufaei turing districts, was not less than half a million. As the English operative re- ' I reives for his labor only a miserable pittance which bare y supports 1 te, but few lofthem, even if disposed can make any . ‘ provission for the future hence the triinendous disturbance in social relations .! which followed, when this vast number , of people were thrown out of employment ■ «as of a character whose enormous pioportionsdefied alike philanthropist and . statesman. The only thing at first that could be done to alleviate the evil, was to collect f I charities fiom the wealthier classes- Ihe , response was p ompt iiml liberal, which, together with the relief sent from this country, enabled the <li>em ed. V' v-io avoid starvation until the loss ■[of material the difficulty in this country could be sup; lied from o:her I sources The lessening of evil occurred II gradually, through the agency of direct charities, emigration employment in oth- •[ er departments of labor, an 1 the partial . i revival of work in many of the inanufac-: turing districts. At present the original . number of half a million is reduced to 184,00L', which is the total of those who as yet are « holly dependent upon ch mity forsuppo't. Os the rest, over 250,01/0 are at full wok, and over 100,000 em ployed on short time. Much of this amelioration is due to j the new sources of cotton supply which have been opened within the last twelve . months. India, Turkey, Egypt, and ; Brazil have furnished cotton sufficient to greatly lessen the evi, and it is estimated ■that those places, in 1804, will increase I the yield of the present year by at least I Boo,uoo bales. 'I his will go far tow.-vd* ■entirely removing the immense burden which the British people for the last two ' years have borne in consequence of the I war in this country.— The English are I ■ I‘eally entitled to much credit for their [ action d.tring these severe times the op[eratives for the patience with which th.-y i have borne their sufferings, and the remainder, for the liberality, with . which, they have contributed, to their r i relief. , [ Ihe balances and machinery of nations are so intim-itely connected under our I mode: n civilization, that disarran 'incut in ea-eofonc is alway* accompanb <1 bv difficulties in the cases of the others.— !
