THE PEDLER’S PACK. j It whs nlondy looking house, n good ‘distance from any other, and standing at (he end of a long avenue and it# only, occupants on the day in question were two women servants and a boy. The time perhaps hung heavily on the hands ol these three, since (he appearance of a queer figure toiling up the avenue, was \ hailed with unconcealed satisfaction. ••B’s old Burke, the j tgger, said, I ( one? , It isn’t old Burke; but he’s got a pack , any how. How slow he walks, and its J getting dusk; we shan’t be able to see j the things? ■I The j igger, or bagman, or peJdl* r, ( which ever you like the best, came to the ■ I door, w iping hi’ forehead and groaning J under his bur.hn— and well he might. • Surely a pack of such size had never be- • lore wearied the enduring shoulders of a ■ bagman. He did not attempt to ease himself of It, however, or to display, ■ his wares, in the customary, manner, j but took, of his hat, to the women, po-
litely. ‘■Would th“ mistress take pity on him ( rnd let him leave his pack in the hall or , the kitchen —anywhere, so that it would be safe, and be would call (or it next day. Now, the master and mistress were, as we have seen, from home, so was the man who filled the offices of coachman, groom and gardner, with the help of the boy above mentioned, as a sub; and neither master, mistress, or coachman would return that night. The thr.e servants looked at each other inquiringly, a little cuiious and a great deal disappoin- ■ ted •What’s in the pack?’ asked one i ‘Oh, it’s not a Tegular pack, but nn order,’ replied the bagman. ‘A lot of ‘coarse cloth and sums gunpowder—nothintlot would do to show tl:e l.tdies. U But Ini very tired, and have to much tarlher. If I might leave it where it would be safe to night, 1 ve got a few , shawls and things I cotil 1 bring with me 'to marrow, when I returned tor it? ' -Again the women, looked nt each, other. ■, •Shawls lots he got? What else?’ •A few trtil.a. Perhaps a nice gown apiece? | ‘Well, he might leave the pack if he ; • hked but he must take it away early next ( <l«y.’ ; ( The peddler entered the hall nnJ prepared to lav down his burden: then he espied the door of a little room, which would have been a butler’s pantry t( the t house hail boasted a butler. Might he : pul it there, because of 'he gunpowder? 1 And it was put there accordingly, the • bagman closing the door after him care t fully, and warning the friendly receivers,] not tc take a fight into the rem on any. account because, ol the gunpow < J *■ **» < The women went back to theij kitchen < snd the boy linger' d in lhe hall rnedita • lively having watched the peddler down I the avenue. The last ; rays of the Setting sun streamed througu I th" little window, and fell upon the pack i lying in huge state en the floor. Again , the boy walked up and down the hall, and , again lie looked long and anxiously I through the k"V hole. Did ti e pack move a little ns ho stared at i ? I ‘Gunpowder's al! in my eye; I'm go* ing to shoot it because there’s a mortal man in it; and a man doesn’t get himself wrapped in a pack (or no good purpose, that's what I say. Tin nhe opened the door, i boldly. •Ii this pack’s nn honest pack,’said Joseph it won’t mind a shot? Perhaps the pack really moved, or perhaps Joseph was a little nervous, fortlie last word was not out of bis tr.oulh when the report of the gun rang through the room. A dead silence followed it. Joseph’s eyes were fixed in a wide open star* on the pack. Presently, a small red spot came o. r. ng through the coarse wrap- ' ping, it grew largt r. A little red stream trickled down on the floor, and crawled toward’s the boy’s leet. Then he retired, hastily ami locked, the door, again.
His face was very pale. lie had killed a man and it »as a horrible thing tv do and to think of.. iNow you two lock all the doors, an! make them to fast as you can,’ be said; ‘that peddler chap won’t stop till morning lor his pack I'm thinking. What o’ clock is it, ten? Let us put lights in ail '.be rooms, and make believe there's a party —a regular houseful I? Once during the nfght Joseph, standing near a window, fancied he heard a whistle outside; lis heart gave a great jump and he signalled to the woman to move about and slam the doors, ane make as much noise ns they could. Tbd whistle was repeated once only, nnd then all was quiet. But though the mofntng light broke in upon the servants, thev could not g<> to bed or rest for thinking ol lli-t ghas'ly thing down in the butler's pantry. N.mn brought the master of the house but no peddler came with shawls or gown pic. s. When they, undid, the pack, the hand of th" dead man was found clutching a small whistle, and he had a belt on, stuck with risto's and a cutlrt. It is and some, time afterward, one of the gang, ol rubers being, canglit, in a burglary, contested, himself lobe the identical, bagman who left his pack at tl.e lonely, house, and never, went ts claim it. A llvi-t’Y Woman.—What spectacle more pleasing does the world afford than a happy woman, contented in her sphere ready at all times to benefit her little world by her exertions, and transforming the briars and thorns of life into roses of Paradise by the magic of her touch?— 1 here are those who are thus happy because they cannot help it—on misfortunes depend their smiles, ami they diffuse a cheerful glow around them as they pursue the even tenor of their way. They have the secret of contentment, whoso value is above the phi’osopher's stone; for without seeking the bases enchange of gold which may buy some sort of pleasure they convert everything they touch into iov. What their condition is it makes no difference. They maybe rich or poor, or liigb or low. admired or forsaken by the fickle wor'd bul the sparkling fountain of happiness bubbles up in their hearts and makes them tatUantly beautiful. Though they live in a log cab’.in thev make it shine with luster which Kings and Queens may covert, ami they make wealth a fountain of blessings to the cl.iltli en of poverty. Ila: ;>y women are the types of humanity. We cannot say how much we owe to them for the progress pf the race. Would there were enough to go round.
