THEN AND NOW. I Hon. O. 11. Browning was one of the r-peakers at the recent grand democratic! mass meeting at Quincy. The Herald ssvr Mr. B. made a noble ipeech. He demonstrated (whal democrats g enerally ihave regarded, as an impossibility) lhati | a man can call himself . ripublic.au an I I twill be a patriot.’ Also, that “bis ' speech, met the cordina!' approbation ind hearty, applause, of the demo-' crafs.’ A year ago Mr. Browning was Lincoln's 'eight hand man” in the sei,au«. They were, then boath,' conservative, men, engaged in devising measures lor carrying on the war with vigor lor the suppression of the, rebellion and nstorat ton of the union. The democratic party then supported Mr. Lincoln earnestly and heartily. No man accuses Mr. Brow ning of having changed his uolttics since then, but he now finds himself at home tn a democratic meeting while the demo cracy are accused of turning traitors to the government for ceasing to support Mr. Lincoln's administration. The dem-' ocracy then were loyal enough—so was Mr. Browning. They, stand now, where they stood I hen. How is it that loyally, a year ago is secessionism now? Supports, the democracy turn about and I support, Mr. Lincoln, again, how long, will, it be till their, new position is dec’sred treason? Is loyally ti thing, of fits, and starts —one thing. today and another, to morrow. — Alton Denioerst. ‘Bebel Sympathizers.”—Sever’d o< the gurrillas who made the late rai l into Crawford and Orange counties and who 1 were captured near Leaverworth, stated to citiz-ns who conversed wilh tin tn th it they had heard so much about rein I sympathizers in Southern Indiana, that they 1 tullv expected when they crossed the river that not only would they be rei ceived with open arms by a large proportion ot the inhabitants, but that they would be able to get a number of recruits from among the sypathiz -rs.’ They con ’ lessed. however, that in these respects thev were greatly disappointed. Not only diil they get no recruits, but i they said they did not meet with any eont< nance whatever from a single ci i-z.-n in the district of country through which they passed. Everywhere the | people treated 'hem as enemies, and were ready to join in hunting down and cap-. Hiring them. And not only was such ( the case, but had the gang been taken anywhere in th- neihhborhood in which they bad been indulging in their horse stealing propensi'ies it would have been a difficult matter to have prevented the I hanging of the entire band. The irutli is, the people of Southern Indiana have no sympathy whatever for rebel soldiers or tile rebel cause and are ready and anxiaus to show their devotion to their country not only hy words but acts.—| N. A. Ledger. A Slave Captures his Ma ter —-The following ’ncident described as taking place at the recent battle of Milliken's B'-nd, is significant of the result to Slavery whicn, this infamous rebellion is 'working out. Who shall say they are ■ not just. Among the incidents of the fight worthy of note; was the capture of a re- 1 ’ bel soldier by a darkey who was his slave ' two month ago --The T, xan was caught in a tight place hy one of the Co). L-ib’s men, who cried out to him Hold on dar, and put down your gun, or I’ll shoot.” The rebel surendered unconditionally but after identifying his captor, said to one of our officers that he pro'ested against being held as a prisoner hy his , own slave—lts good enough for you,” said the officer; that's just the man to guard you.” Anti jim, (addressing the soldier) if he don’t behave himsell, shoot him down. The chi’valous Southerner was very indignant and bis wrath t-fier-reseed in a series of hard oaths, fell upon j the enrs of the intelligent contraband without effect. The dusky warrior kept | a close eve upon his prisoner but refused to hold any conversation with him. or answer any of his questions as to when he inlisted or how he dared to level a gun at his masters. Prophecy of General Jackson.—Slid the old, here to a friend at the Hermitage, a short time before his death: The abolition party is a disloyal organization. I’s pretended love of freedom means nothing more nor less than a dissolution of the union. Honest men of al] parlies should unite to i xpose their intentions and arrest their progress.' Experience, has fully, demonstrated that, abolitionism “means nothing, more nor less than ,a dissolution, of the union.’ Daniel, Webster, the patriot, and i statesman, in one,, of his, speeches i uttered the following, unmistakable, language. 'll the infernal fanatics and abolitionists ever get the power in their hands, they will overide the constitution, set < the Supremo Court at defiance, change and make laws to suit themselves, lay violent hands, on those who differ with them, in their opinions, or dare, question their, infallibility, and finally l>ankrtipt, the country and deluge it wilh, blood.’ An old Aberdonian used to say in sum--1 rning np all the disastrous changes of modern tim»s Even the ladies at the schule maun hae their pocket handkeicbers.”
A LOYAL COLONEL, The claim urged by the Abolitionists ; that their party is the only loyal parly in the. nation would excite our indigna'ion did it not first siir up our ridicule. One; Thomas W, Higginson, a reverend,” is ! Colond of a South Carolina regim' nt of negroes. That this Convention re- • commends, as the first step towards the accomplishment of this ohj-ct the organ'iz ition in each of the States, of a political party outside of the present Consli fution and Unton—a party whose candidates shall be publicly, pledged in the event, of their election to ignore the Fed- , < ral Government, to refuse an oath to its ' Constitution and to make their re'speci tive State’ free and independen. commuI nities.
