THE VOYAGEE GF LIFE. Sailing down the stream of time— Looking back to view the shore, VV here n»y early years began, To retrace them nevermore! Often by the way I've lost. Little barques that sailed, with me, Some were often tempest tossed, Others sank into the sea. Eyes that beamed on me so bright When I started on life's main. Closed while yet 'twas morning light, Closed, and opened ne’er again. Hopes that sparkled in the sun, Diamond like on every wave. Sank when billows bunt upon— Sank and only left a— crave. Still my little bark is sailing Down the rapid stream of time: Sails are torn and timbers tailing— Making for another clime. Hangs a rainbow' over head, 'Mi l the clouds a golden bar; And on ocean's darksome bed. Brightly glows the evening star. g- .'J-11-l - W.-'WJ,. ■ J .■ J Sambo Recruiting—Funny Scenes. There was a colored meeting on Monday evening in Washington. We copy from the Star: Dr. Cooper (white) said the fear that the colored soldier will not be properly protected has no foundation. Secretary sianLua ha* given a letter staling that no fear need be apprehended on this point A soldier biack or white is a soldier and must »ud will receive the protection of
the Government. Captain liiornet (white), of the British N.fy kad seen Negro regiments fight alongside of Eng- shn.en, and tbeir bayonets were never behind. Henry Johnston (colored), of north C uohna was going to be a soldier. He expected them to kill him, but let them. When the men were fighting the women most fight too —while the men are fighting the rebels in toe field, the wunien must fight the rebel women in inis city, •nd whip em too. [laughter.] He was i levated when he heard of the <lection of Mr. Lincoln, and after the war the colored regiments weie coming back to elect him again. [Applau-e] Some elid'd want to go along with the contrabands. For iis part he just as lief go long with a contraband as any other sort of a band. [Laughter ] The fact was, the contrabands were getting ahead. Just below this very building they are marching around. They Lad nothing but sticks tor gun«; he b-lievrd if they had sure enough guns they would shcot somebody. Before an opportunity was presented for them io 1-> so, many of the colored people were spiling for fight— hey were ready and anxious to die for their race—but now whar are dey? What do you want Mr. Ltr.kum to do—feed you on icecream? [L >ud laughter ] Had we the pride of the white man, we would have been free I ng ago. Suppose these white men here were about to be driven into slavery, w nildn’t they fight? Certainly they wou;d; but you! you would stand tamely, sti i let your han Is be crossed behind your back, and told, ‘go on dar nigger,’ without resisting it. Go in de war, and when. Davis sees you he w; 11, say, 'My Lor, look, at de niggers’’ [This speech was the hit of the evening bringing ‘lie house down in of repeated and prolonged screams of laughter — attributable, more, perhaps, to die manner than the matter, of the speaker ] Rev. James Reed had purchased I.is liberty years ago, but could not say he hail ever felt himself free. There is not a free colored n an in the District of Columbia; not one. Thought the President had by proclamation made us free, we were still slaves You boast that you are free, but what guarantee have you that it will not he taken from you? General Bingham, (white) was, intro'uccd, but was interrupted with cries for Hatton. Hattin at length cams forward, and said lie didn’t feel in the kilter for speaking. It was reported that thought he bad signed the rolls he would back out. Not so. He was going under Turner, and hoped to do hi’ first fighting in the mother State ol slavery—Virginia. He had noticed a great deal of stamping of faeland clapping of hands, when the name of libertv was pronounced; but al though R number of invitations had been given, thus far there has not been a sin-, gie response. He thought any man who wnnfd act this way ought <<> be across th* Hies. Time was, when a negro dare, not strike, a white, man. but he was. getting, up in the world, now. The Chairman of the Ex-C’l'ive com mi'tee said there are rich lands there which w e will go and possess We will become suhst.an'ial voters and | revolutionized the Government of \ irgiuia. [Applause.] We will Chris tiamze the Mahommedan, heathen savage, slaveholder of the South with our blood. | General Brigham (while) followed, and at a late, hour the meeting adj Mir- | ned. without, however procuring any additional recruits we believe.
