Skilion Houghton Manager. jpSTWe have received Godey for May. Ils magnificent illustrations are unsnr- | paseii. Webster is standard authority in regard to the English language, but the ladies quote Godey ns equally h’gh authority on fashions. J3?*Tlie May number of the Homa Magazine has been received. We should be pleased to see this magazine in every 1 family circ.e in the land. No one can peruse its instructive lessons of every day life without becoming wiser and better. Howard Association of Philadelphia, still continues its kind and benificent aid to the afflicted, in all the lay- , al States, and every where maintains a j high character for honorable conduct and professional skill. We feel assured that it may be relied on as a sound and highly useful Institution. A new card from the managers will be found in our advertising columns. E'-eF Mr. D. Studebaker removed with ' his family to Fort Wayne this week, and ! will make that plsce his future lesidence. In his removal we have parted with one j .of our best citizens, and the legal proses- : ■nion its leading spirit. His object in making the change, we believe, is to secure I a btoader field, to labor in the practice of his profession. Industry ami studious habits combined with sound judgement nnd natural ability will secure him an em- | inent position, among his legal associates I ia bis new home. A specimen of the rebels work at I Pittsburg Landing, arrived at this place last week in the shape of a wounded sold- j ier — I’eter Litz-I—who was struck by a piece of a shell on the arm. The shell struck within a few feet of him nnd burst, and the only damage done was the wound on his arm, and destroying bis gun.— Litzel and Jerome Meyers, boys from this county, were wounded in this battle, and the only ones. Meyers had his leg broken—above the knee—since amputated— and also is supposed to have re- : ceived a shot in the hips. His recovery j is doubtful. He is supposed to be in hospital at Evansville or New Albany. OBITUARY. Died, of Typhoid Fever, at Riddle’s' Point. Mo., in Camp, April 7th, Mr. John W. Kern, 4th Sergeant Company C , 47th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers, i Mr. Kern was acting as Commissary . Sergeant, in the Quartermaster’s Depart- 1 inent at the lime be was taken sick. He was violently attacked with Cramp Colic near New Madrid, and those who watched with him at the time doubted his recovery. When our camp was moved be was left with the sick, hut he was brought up several days after. He was put in Hospital Quarters and carefully waited on — Mr. George Humes watched with him, and nursed him with the kindest attention to the very last. On the morning of April Ist, apprehensive that ho would not recover, I had a free conversation with him on the subject of religion. He fold me his father and mother were Christian people and had often conversed with him on his obligations to lead a religious life. In his conscious weakness and frailty he rememembered their pious counsels, and felt the need of a Higher Power. At his request I read a chapter in the Bible and prayed with him. I asked him almost every day if he wanted us to write to any of his friends, or if he desired any word sent to them. He always answered in the negative. He was calm and hopeful throughout most of his illness, and he did not wish his friends to be grieved on bis account. Mr. Kern was much respected and beloved by the regiment, and the deepest interest was felt in him during his entire sickness. Every attention his friends could show hiHi was cheerfully given, and had he been his own son Mr. Humes could not have been more faithful in waiting upon him. Lieut. Dain of Indianapolis, Capt. Dent, and Major Mickla were present when he died. Tbeir sympathy •nd emotion were genuine and undisguised, and they wept as bosom friends weep over one they love. Major Mickle closed bis eyes, and helped to set bis features *n repose, so that bia mother had she
been here would have known her noble son, reduced and changed in death, but still the same. Surelv the soldier is not always forgotten by his comrades in arms in the hour of affliction. In a few moments we shall follow the remains of our brother soldier to his last resting place. He will receive Christian burial and the honors of war will be given at his grave, with no unmeaning form. We have lost a warm hearted friend and a generous comrade, and we how submissively to that Providence that has called him away. We scarcely know what words to write that can drv the parental tears that will flow unbidden from their fountains, as we communicate the sad tidings of the untimely fall of a noble ■ son. May the grace of God which is alone sufficient for every time of need ba ’ given in abundant measure to the mournI ing family circle. SAMUEL SAWYER. Chaplain 47th Regt., Ind.
