- -- - - - - - - J Speak Gently to Each Other. , ‘■i-’laatie to help me a minute, sister.’ ‘Oh, don’t disturb me, I’m reading,' was the answer. ‘But just held this slick, won’t you, while I drive this pm through ‘1 can’t now, 1 wan’t to finish this story,’ said I, emphatically; and my little brother turned away j with a disappointed look, in search j of some boby else to assist him. He was a bright boy of ten ' years, and my only brother. He Lad been visiting a young friend and had seen a windmill, and as scon as he came home his energies were all employed in making | a small one; for he was always trying to make tops, wheelbarrows kites sod all sorts of things, such at boyk delight in. lie hi d worked patiently all the morning with I saw and jack-knife, and now it on- ; ly needed putting together to I complete it—and his only sister j had refused to assist him, and he i had gone away with his young heart saddened. I thought of all this in the fifteen minutes after he left me, and my book gave me no pleasure.— It was not intentional unkindness only thoughtlessness, for I loved | my brother, and was generally kind to him. still I had refused to, help him. I would have gone after him and afforded him the assistance he needed, but I knew ho had found some one else. But; I had neglected an opportunity ot i gladdening a chidish heart. In half an hour they came bounding into the house, exclaiming, ‘Come, Mary, I’ve got it up; just see how it goes!’ His tones ' were joyous, and I saw that he had j forgotten my petulence, so I de- j termined to atone by unusual kind-1 ness. I went with him, and sure enough on the roof of the wood-j house was fastened a miniature windmill, and the arms were whirling around fast enough to suit any boy. I praised the wind mill and my little brother's inge- j nuity, nnd he seemed happy and I entirely forgetful of my unkindness, and I, resolved, as I had so many times before, to be always loving and gentle. A few days passed by, and the shadow of a great sorrow darken ed our dueling. The joyous I laugh and noisy glee were hushed, and pur merry boy lay in a darkened room with anxious faces i around him, his cheeks flushed, i and his eyes unnaturally bright ' sometimes his temples would \ moisten and his mucles relax, and . then hope would come into our j hearts, and eyes would fill with thankful tears. It was in one ol these deceitful calms in his disease that he heard the noise of his little wheel, and said, ‘I hear my windmill.’ ‘Does it make your head ache? ] I asked—‘Shall we take it down? ‘Ob! no,’ replied he, ‘it seems; as it I were out of doors, and it i makes me fell better. He mnsed a moment and then added: ‘Don't you remember, , Mary, that I want, d you to I el) ' me fix it, and y< u was ; adir.j- and tub' me you could not? But it didn’t make any difference, for' mamma helped pie.* ‘Ob, how sadly these words fell upon my car, and what bitu-r memories they awasened. How I repented, I kisse ! little Frank’? f< n-iiead, that I had evgr spoken unkindly io him. Hours of sorrow went by, and we watched his comb, hope growing fainter, and i anguish deeper, until, one week I from the morning on which he spoke of his childish sports we i closed the eyes once bo sparkling] and folded Ids hands over hi? pulseless heart. He sleeps nowin ths grave, and home is desolote i but the little windmill, the work of Ids busy hands, is still swingin" in the breeze just where he placed it, upon the roof of the old woodshed; and every time I see | the t’ny arms revolving I remem ber the lost little Frank—and ] rememher also the thoughtless, ' unkind words. Brothersand sisters, be kind to each other. Be gentle, considerate and loving. — Examiner. A midshipman asked a priest to tell him the difference between a priest and a jackass. The priest gave it up. ‘One wears a cross on his back, and the other on his breast,’ said the midshipman.— ‘Now.’ said the priest, ‘tell me the difference between a midshipman and a jackass. I'ne midshipman gave it up, and asked what it was. The priest said he did not know of any. A woman’s heart, like a sing-ing-bird in a cage, if neglected, starves and dies; but, for men's hearts, why they are free birds of prey—vultures and Lawk?—or tiievish magpies at the best. •John, did you ever bet on n hor.se race?’ No. but I’ve seen my sister bet on an old marc
