Spci.fc Gently <® Each Other‘Plaase to help me a tninste. sister.’ ‘Oil. don't disturb me, I’m reed • ing,’ was the answer ‘But just hold this stick, won’t you, while Idrive this pin throng*. •I cau’tnow, I wan’t to finish jtbirf story.’ said I. emphatically, land my little brother turned away j with a disappointed look, in search of some boby else to assist him. ; He was a bright boy of ten iyenrs, and my übiy brother. He I bad been visiting b young friend and had seen a windmill, and as soon as he came home his energies were all employed in making •a small out ; for he was always . trying to make tops, wiieelbai rows I kites and all sorts of things, such |as boys delight in. He In d work ied patiently all the morning with j saw and jack-knife, and now it cn '!y needed putting together to complete it—and bis only sister had refused to assist him, and he had gone away with his young heart saddened. 1 thought of all this in the fifteen minutes after he left me, and ray book gave me na pleasure. ; It was not intentional unkindness only thoughtlessness, for I loved my brother, and was generally kind to him. still I had refused to help him. I would have cone after him and afforded him the assistance he needed, but I knew he Lad found some one else. But I had neglected an opportunity of gladdening a chidish heart. In half an hour they cam» bounding into the house, exclaiming, ‘Come, Mary, I’ve got it. up. just see how it goes!’ His tones were joy ous, and I saw that he bad forgotten my petulence, so I determined to atone by unusual kindness. I went with him, and sure enough on the roof of the woodhouse was fastened a miniature windmill, and the arms were whirling around fast enough to suit any boy. I praised the windmill and my little brother’s ingenuity, nnd he seemed happy and entirely forgetful of ray unkindness, and I, resolved, as I had so many times before, to be alwavs loving and gentle. A few dajs passed by, and tbo shadow of a great sorrow darkened our dweiing. The joyous laugh and noisy glee were hush ied, and our merry boy lay in a darkened room with anxious face* around him, his cheeks flushed, and his eyes unnaturally bright, sometimes bis temples would moisten nnd his mucles relax, and then hope would come into our hearts, and eyes would fill with thankful tears. It was in one of j these deceitful calms in his disi ease that he heard the noise of hi* 'little wheel, nnd said, ‘I hear my ! windmill.’ i ‘Does it make your head ache?’ i 1 asked — ‘Shall we take it down* 1 ‘Oh! no,’ replied he, 'it seems las it I were out of doors, and it I makes me fell better. i He mnsed a moment and then added: ‘Don’t you remember, ( Mary, that I wanted you to help j me fix it, and you was reading and I told me you could not? But it didn't make any difference, for 1 mamma helped me.’ ‘Ob, how sadly these words fell ! upon my ear, and what bitter ! memories they awakened. How I repented, I kissed little Frank'* forehead, that I bad ever spoken unkindly to him. Hours of sorrow went by, and we watched his couch, hope growing fainter, and anguish deeper, until, one week horn the morning on which ha spoke of his childish sports we> closed the eyes once so sparkling and folded his hands over his pulseless heart. He sleeps now in the grave, and home is desololo but. the little windmill, the work of his busy hands, is still swinging in the breeze just where he placed it, upon the roof of the old woodshed; and every time I see the t'hy arms revolving I remember the lost little Frank—and I remember also the thoughtless, unkind words. Brothersand sisters, be kind to each other. Be gentle, considerate and loving.— Examiner. A midshipman asked a priest to tell him the difference between a priest and a jackass. The priest gave it up. ‘One wears a cross on his back, and the other on his breast,’ said the midshipman.— •Now,’ said the priest, ‘tel! me the difference between a midshipman and a jackass.’ The midshipman gave it up, and Asked what it was. The priest said he did not know of any. A woman’s heart, like a sing-ing-bird in a cage, if neglected, sta r ves and dies; but, for men’s hearts, why they are free birds of prey—vultures and hawks—or thievish magpies at the best. ■John, did you ever bet on a horserace?’ No. but I've seen -n---uster hs’ on an old mini
