The venerable Judge Henry Potter, of the U. S distrct court in North Carolina, is no more. He died near Fayetteville, on Sunday last, at the advanced age of ninety-two years. The Petersburg Express says: ■Judge Potter was born in Mecklenburg, Va., in 1765; was appointed district judge by Mr. Jefferson in 1801, and was long associated in the discharge of his duties with Chief Justice Marshall. He was a cotemporary of Caswell, Davie, Alexander, Doffy, Taylor. Hill, and others distinguished in their day in North Carolina, and was the last survivor of those who signed the original constitution of the Grand Ledge of Masons in that State, in 1787. ‘Judge Potter was in Philadelphia, and was present and heard Gen. Washington deliver his first message to the Congress ! that convened after his election to the Presidency. He was also familiar with the presence of Hamilton, Madison, Adams, Jefferson, Lee, Wayne, Carroll,! Pinckney, Randolph, King, and others.’; Captuke of Slavers on the coast if Africa.—Theb'rk Win. G. Lewis, thir-ty-five days from the coast of Africa, arrived al Norfolk, Va., yesterday, having been captured as a slaver in Congo river i by a boat expedition commanded by Lieuts. Walker and Cummins, from sloopof war Dale. The brig Windward, captured as a sup- i posed slaver, is also expected at Norfolk in a few days. The British steamer Elector seized the barque C. B. Wiliams and an American schooner about the same time. Man) slavers are reported on the Aftican coast. Twelve have been captured since the Dale ariived out. The Dale was to leave ■ soon for Helena—all well. Canton to be Captured.— A correspondent of the London News, writing from Canton, October 16, says that Lord Egin has concerted measures with his excellency the naval capture of the city of Canton. The admiral has arranged the whole available force to move up io Canton on the 31st of October, and it is said that the French forces will co-operate; it is thonght the Russian Admiral Pontiatin will also offer his aid. Moffat’s Life Pills and Phoenix Bitters. Physically considered, man is the paragon of animals; bnt his system is liable to external and internal derangements to which we give the name of disease.— Remedies of a simple kind should be first employed. The Moffat Life Pills purify the blood, renovate the delicate organs of the stomach, whilst the Phoenix Bitters, by gently stimulating the appetite, given new zest to life and its enjoyments. W. B. Prospectus for 1858. rWMtMS SATURDAY EVENING POST, ESTABLISHED AUGUST 4. 1821. The Paper that Never Su-pends. A FAMILY WEEKLY, DEVOTED TO LITERATURE <t NEWS. In these times of Bank suspensions and Mercantile suspension., the proprietors of the Sa ; turday Evening Post call the attention of the ; reading public to their old and firmly established weekly paper, as the paper that never ; suspends. For over THIRTY SIX YEARS Ti e Post has been published ; and in nil that period—through “good times” and through 'bad | times,'through bank inflationsand bank contractions, through prosperous seasons and ; through panics, the Post hash en regularly issued every week, and forwarded to its t.houj sands of subscribers. Its proprietors therefore point to the past as an unfailing index of the future. And they feel that in asking of the reading public a continuance of the patronage heretofore so liberally bestowed upon The Post, they are asking no more than what it will be both the interest and the pleasure of that pub. lie to grant, Among the contributors to the Post, we mw mention the following gifted writers: William! Howitt, All ice Care v, T. S. Anthur, Grace Greenwood, Anna Blackwell, Augustine Duganne, Mrs. M. A. Denison, Emma Allicc Browne, the author of "An Extra-Judicial ! Statement,” the author of “Zillah, the Child Medium,” Ac. NOVELET, BY T. S. ARTHUR. Mr. Arthur’s productions are so widely known, that we need hardly say t at the tone of the present novelet will be consistent with the Mo ral and instructive character which welmvealways striven to impress upon the Post. Read- | ers who wish to peruse the flash stories which abound in the land—pernicious and destruc tive in their tendency and effects—can find them, we regret say, at every corner. But the Post will still maintain its high character, as a piper which the most scrupulous parent may allow freely to enter , THE FAMILY CIRCLE; And which will purify and and instruct, instead ]of demor lizing and corrupting the youthful mind. Especially will its conductors avoid, in the publication of the weekly news, all those long and disgusting reports —unfortunately now so common—of vile criminal cases; Relieving, as they do, that the practice of pubi lishing rhe details of such loathsome cases, and 1 criminal trials resulting therefrom, is a frui’f d '.cause of the recent alarming increase of vice ■ and crime in the community. Like begets like i and what the mind feeds upon, that it will grow ; to resemble. CHOICE SELECTIONS Os all kinds, from the b-st foreign and do- | mestic sources, shall continue to be, as hereto- ] fore a leading feature of The Post.
