The New Yo rk Democracy. An immense mass-meeting of the Democracy of the city of New York was held on Ihursday evening last, to sustain the administration of President Buchanan The meeting was held outside Tammanv Hall in consequence of the refusal of the Sachems of that Society to admit inside of that ancient head quarters of the De-' mocracy. The New York News says of the meeting: “The gallant and true-hearted Democracy of New York have come to the support of James Buchanan as they did that of Andrew Jackson under similar circumstances. The leaders of Tammanv Hall faltered then as now, when the Old' Hero i removed the deposits from the rotten United States Bank; but the Democracy of New York rallied to his standard, and their approval, no doubt, gave pleasure I to him who needed no support but that of conscience to sustain him in that position.’ Letters were read in approval of the policy of the President from a large number of the most emint nt Democrats in that State. The following is the expression of the meeting on Kansas affairs: “Resolved, That while we would have preferred that the entire Constitution pro- ■ posed for the State of Kansas should have been submitted to popular approval, we congratulate the people of that Territory upon the opportunity now presented to them of passing upon the question which has so long disturbed theii peace and destroyed their material prosperity and progress; that nothing but the wicked and factious pertinacity of professional agitators can now stand in the way of the early admission of this new State into the Union, with the unqualified power remaining in her people to alter and amend its Constitution thenceforth as to them may seem best; that while we fully and unreservedly concur in this view of the ease, we desire to urge on all democrats the necessity of conciliation and goo 1 feeling among brethren, upon this and all similar questions, that, especially upon the floor of Congress and in the newspaper press, no animosities be engendered and no division lines drawn, which may militate against our future hatnony and success—believing, a ■■e do, that upon the ascendency of Democratic principles mainlv depend the safety and perpetuity of our Union. Prospectus for 1858. MMNS SATURDAY EVENING POST, ESDAIILISHEII august 4, 1821. The Paper that Never Suspends. A FAMILY WEEKLY, I DEVOTED TO LITERATURE A NEWS. In these times of Bank suspensions and Mercantile suspensions, the proprietors of the Sa ) turday Evening Post call the attention of the reading public to their old and firmly estab- • hshed weekly paper, as the paper that never suspends. For over THIRTY-SIX YEARS Ti e Post has been published; and in all that period—through “good limes” and through 'bad | times,’through bank inflationsand bank contractions, through prosperous seasons and through panics, the Post hash en regularly is sued every week, and forwarded to its thou- : sands of subscribers. Its proprietors therefore I point to the past as an unfailing index of the future. And they feel that in asking of the i reading public a continuance of the patronage I heretofore so liberally bestowed upon The Po.t they are asking no more than what it will be both the interest and the pleasure of that pub. lie to grant, Among the contributors to the Post, we may mention the following gifted writers; William ' Howitt, Allice Carev, T. S. Authur, Grace I ! Greenwood, Anna Blackwell, Augustine Daganne. Mrs. M. A. Denison, Emma Allicc j Browne, the author of “An Extra-Judicial Statement.” the author of “Zillah, the Child Medium,” <fcc. NOVELET, BY T. S. ARTHUR. Mr. Arthur’s productions are so widely known, (that we need hardly say t at the tone of the present novelet will be consistent with the Mo : ral and instinctive character which wehaveal- j ways striven to impress upon the. Pott. Read- i ers who wish to peruse the flash stories which I abound in the land—pernicious and destruc I tive in their tendency and effects—can find them, we regret say, at every corner. But the I Post will still maintain its high character, as a ; p iper which the most scrupulous parent may j ; allow freely to enter THE FAMILY CIRCLE; And which will purify and and instruct, instead of demur lizing ami corrupting the youthful mind. Especially will its conductors avoid, in the publication of the weekly news, all those I long and disgusting reports —unfortunately i 1 now so common—of VILE CRIMINAL CASES; Believing, ns they do, that, the practice of ;>nb- . lishing rhe detailsol such loathsome cases, and ' criminal trials resulting therefrom, is a fruitful , cause of the recent alarming increase of vice I and crime in the community. Like begets like I and what the mind feeds upon, that it will grow to resemble. CHOICE SELECTIONS Os all kinds, from the b-st foreign and do- , mestic sources, shall continue to be, as heretoj fore a leading feature of Tub Post.
