’ Tides in the Pncifie. j There are some interesting phenomenas onnected with the tides in the Pacific j )cean which have excited much attention .mong scientific men, but of which no , atisfactory solution has yet been given. , It Tahiti, find other of the society Islands } he tides are uniform throughout the year ; being invariably high water at noon , nd midnight, and low water at six o'clock ’ i the morning and evening, the ordinary (j ide being about three feet. What is , g lore remarkable is, that a common law . f nature governing tides prevails all the .lands east and west on the same parallel ‘ [latitude. »The fact is vouched for on 1 ie testimony of both scientific travelers 10 nd missionaries, who have observed it >r the last filly years. The natives 'q ame the different hours of the day and ’’ ight by the state of the tide, and a nan' vc, instead of asking the time, would say here is the tide? ot In 1837, a remarkable ebb and flowoc,v jrred at Honolulu, in the Sandwich Is- ■, nds. On the 7th Nov. at 6P. M., the ' :a suddenly fell between eight and nine j et., leaving the r-'.sfs dry and exposing ,** -eat numbers of fish, which were gath--3 ed by the nativesin great quantities.— :ie sea, however, quickly returned, and \ twenty-eight minutes reached the height the ordinary tide—when it immediately receded and fell six teet. The ebb id flow continued at intervals - f twenty‘,'jght minute. On the third rising it was 'jj ur inches above ordinary high tide, and jII again six fee: four inches. After this ‘ 1 sing less regularity w : observed in the p’ne and extent of the rise and fall. At 11 P. M the ebb occupied twenty! '.'..inutesand the flow tea minutes. Tire; f ai b and flow ’still continued oe-.-upying tire ‘ ro me space of time exactly, but t' 3 rise ,j.' # d fall decreasing gradually. This c ny'r med till and during the forenoon of the A jhth day, when it Lad deer ease d to a few dies rise and fall, and finally subside i Au together, like the dying vibrations of a m.dulura. The ordinary rise and fall of . "j e tide is about thirty ro forty inches.— ■ t no time did the tide rise higher than a mraon spring tide, but the fall was about n '.\ feet below low water ravk. Th? ’'me phenomenon oaoured in 1319, when “’*"e water rose and fell thirteen times in a c . u ’w honrs. for crv No perceptible motion of the earth or o g.iusual appearance in the atmosphere, atnded these unusual movements of the les. In some places they were attended ith disastrous consequences. At th-. r it-land of Nani, the sea retired about ass-renty fathom.', and immediatly returned yiioith fearful power, sweeping before it led mses, trees, canoes, and every moveable I ,m ’ject within its reach. At Hilo, on the tn land of Hawaii, when the sea retired a xA rge portion of the curious natives rushm- i to witness the scene, when a gigantic the ave came thundering in, rising twenty pre-jit above high water mark, destroying ibrurteen lives and almost demolishing ter-te village. But for the assistance ol ou! >ats, and the amphibious habits of the linjitives, the loss of life would have been ja uch greater. No earthquake was felt, juslit the volcano was unusually disturbed he same phenomenon was observed at , th.ie Navigator Island on thqsame day, at SO P. M, or three hours and twenty ice.' incites previous to its reaching Honors, a distance of 2, ICO miles. Rev.—r. Williams, a South Sea missionary, enrtiys that at Tahiti this phenomenon octuirs once and frequently twice u year; r£ most remarkable feature in this periapical high sea being that it always comes re( jOtn the west and south, west, or in oppo,e jpe direction from the trade winds.— ne pmniodore V< ilkes, in his Exploring cx- , tpdition, in referring to this remarkable rjjienomenon, gives the velocity of the lai wave at about nine hundred miles )eM e hour and notes it to have boon nearly tr j c; nullaneous with the great earthquake ersl his r.o» A Heboic Woman.—lt is related that > be-the year 1780, the Grand Master of rw e Knights of Malta sent as a present, a i thistly bracelet of rubies to Madam du jiurenoy,.a French lady of great beauty, token of extraordinary and gallant eonict, when an Algerine corsair attacked . e vessel in which she was a passenger. ..’jiis lady was in a polacre, bound to Ge-’-a, and the Algerines coming alongside, y l ’tired m a broad side and then grappling '.’’th her, a number of the Algerines ,‘ arded her, sword in hand. The crew ' •hre about to submit to the enemy, when idame du Frtnoy snatched a sabre from n sounded salor and wielded it with aston- ! ! °iing courage and effect. The crew, !ie ‘ r imated and inspired by such an uncxL ~eted example of female valor, fought ' 'th enthusiasm, killed several pirates, ? r °’d drove the remainder back to their irc,i n vessel. When‘this lady reached the ! ’j r ’orc she waseveryjyhere greeted with clamationsby the populace. ".’The Marquis de Chrisleaux waited up- \ her, and with his o.vn hands nlaced an , crown of laurel .on her head—and a .rtrait of her was taken for the Qeen of ' ,’‘anee. — Christian Freeman. list | tin “ than Neves.’—On tlie-j h „jh February, Wm.
