‘SPINSTERS.’ n bere are some terms, now employed isively, which originally were terms, redit, instead ot discredit, so greatly their meaning changed. Among >e is ‘spinster.’ The word, now-a---s, means a maiden woman who has sed what is usually considered the •riageable state—or an ‘old maid,’ to to the more vulgar form of expression it is applied to all such without distion. Spinster,* at first, designated a women, ng or old, who had, before marriage, vided herself with a ‘set oi linen,’ tor y, table, and bed, spun with her own ds! It was a maxim, indeed, that no nan was worthy to become u wife, who not thus proved herself worthy of the iof ‘spinster.’ In the course of time, unmarried women were known, in law. spinsters,’ and they are so designated in certain wills, deeds,&c. Ve think we may say that, were the ■going required as a ‘condition precet’ to this entitlement there would be ‘spinsters,’ indeed, in our day! Inti of learning to work being a credit to >ung ladv, we fear it would be deemed jcided discredit. Now the pianoforte j taken the place of the needle, and it unsidered unreasonable to expect our e fashionable brides to know how to the ‘set of linen’ together, letting re the vulgar idea of spinning it, or thing else, —unless it be ‘spinning et yarn!’ The only ‘wheel’ they w anything about, is that which be- ; ;s totiie polka or the schottische! New Diamond. — Two French chemMessrs. Wohler and Deville; have i reeded in crysta’izing the well-known stance boron, which lias hitherto been I wn only as a greenish brown powder r in combination with an acid, and > submitted specimens of the crystals le French Academy of Sciences a short i since. These crystals possess a bril:y and refractive power which nothnquals but the diamond, and they rijven that in liardess being capable of tching corundum which next to a diad. is the hardest substance known.— specimens yet obtained are very 11, and have a shade of red or yellow; the color is believed to be accidental, they hope that further experiments ’ enable them to procure it colorless. — ; on agrees with, siiiicos in many of its I jerties, and is consideied a iutermedi- ■ between it and carbon.
