Eleven hours later, while the steamer City of Duluth was trying to tow it sshore near Racine, the schooner sank, and five of the crew were drowned and tbe remaining two were saved and taken to Chicago. From the time of the culliaion until sb* was picked tip. the Ayer drifted a dl»tance of forty-five mile* Tb«- spot where •he was taken bold of by the City of Duluth wa* about fifteen mite* from shore. There wa* a dense fog on tbe lake at th* time, and with but an instant'a warning tbe schooner loomed up directly abec ' of th* *tcaroer. The long jib-boom of t' Ayer ran into tbe pilot house of tiOnobo. barely mtoaing tbe wheelman, and then tore it* way out through the end. The rail from bow to quarter wa* tom from it* fastening* by tbe jib-boom, and at last that spar gave way. Tbe bows of the achiwner were broken in by the imps -t of the collision, and her master :nt»diately ordered her anchor overboard. ; The Onoko. which is one of the few iron boats on the lake and lelonga to the Minch flevt of Cleveland, was coming up Lake Michigan loaded with iron ore for the Illinois Steel Company at South Chicago. The Mary D. Ayer, one of Ed E. Ayer'B fleet of cedar vessela. wbb bound down the lake Fght from Chicago to Alpena.
