La-t September th* r*|>'jb’.i c can school trustees had tl. ir first : opportunity to fix a tax levy in < tn is city. The board fixed the < rat* a- follows: Tuition 25 cents, f -pocjal poll 50 cents, tuition poll 50 cents, making a total of 77 i cents for school purpoes, exclud- ‘ ing poll. The last levy fixed by i the democratic * b<->i lx«ard was as t«41ow»: Tuition 15 cents, -pecial : .• rJ ; ing a t<xal for school purposes of 52 cents. Making an it < r>- of levy for school purposes over the democratic levy of 25 cents <-n th* hundred dollars valuation. If you 1 ad i this increase to the 2*> cents increase in taxation for the city proper, you have a total increase of 51 cents on each >IOO valuation of property in the city. The pHE<- does not desire to the work of the common schools hindered for want of sufficient funds, but notwithstanding th* enormous amount of additional tax the levybrought in, the schools do not seem to lie mere proficient and efficient than they were under the former levy. A republncan council and school board seem to be proportionately as expensive as strawberries on January 1. We submit these remarks to show that Mr. Miesse, the G. R. & I. railroad representative may tie correct, it is not the fault of the democratic county commissioners, but is caused solely by the expensive luxury of a republican council and a republican school board. We do not believe that on the fifth of next month the people will repeat their mistake by electing a single republican councilman, even in the republican first ward.
