In a rough pine box, across the top of which were nailed several slates, were two white rats which the youngster eyed with the greatest solicitude. The boy’s hau ls were red. and his teeth chattered from cold, as he looked appealingly at the well dressed men and women wl-o glanced at his small menagerie. In r> ply to the questions of one lady, lie raid that the rats "were nice to look at, that a ‘feller’ could play with them, t.nd that they would chase all the big, black rats away from the house.' At this, one of the rodents stuck its red nose from between the slats, and the lady instinctively started, to scream. The inquisitive rat lost a prosyectivs trade for its owner, who looked ••restfallen. Finally a genuine purcliaser appeared, but both sides were in a dilemma. The box was too big to lie carried home, and no one had tl.e tem erity to transfer the rats to their pockets. The boy finally gave it up as t bad job. and taking ids lx>x in h>s arm, trudged away with his miniature Hagenbeek collection. Regulated by a Hair. One solitary human hair seems a very small thing, but it is the most important part of an important machine In the Capitol at Washington. This machine warms and ventilates the House, the Senate and the various committee rooms, and runs several electric dynamos Its most curious feature is the appliance for telling the proper temperature of the air in the building. A dial arranged like a clock marks different degrees from 0 to IVO; 0 means perfectly dry air, 100 saturated air, 1. e„ air carrying all the moisture if will hold. Human hair absorbs moisture like a rope, becoming shorter when it is wet, In the same way. The hair here is six incites lepg. The difference in length between it when wet and when dry stands for the 100 degrees of moisture on the dial, am! as the moisture of the hair varies the pointer on the dial moves. According to the necessity, more steam is thrown in or steam Is allowed to escape, the atmosphere being in this way regulated and kept at a healthy point. A Painter's Damaged Hand. There is no more skilful right hand In the world t>an that of the Russian painter Verestchagin. \et his right hand is thumbless. His right thumb was bitten by a leopard some years ago, and had to be amputated. The middle linger also of his right hand Is lamed and useless, as the result of a shot-wound which the artist received ou the battle-field. More than this, tha small bones of the centre of his right hand were also partially shattered by a fall on the Russian steppes, and his right arm was broken in the same accident. Nevertheless it is with this damaged right hand that Verestchagin paints his wonderful pictures. Crewing Good Coffee in lowa. Considerable interest has been created in Marion County, lowa, by the experiment of Jacob Bruce, a farmer torth of Knoxville, at coffee-raising on a smffll scale. In the spring of IS'.H Bruce planted seven grains of tine Rio coffee, and In the fall harvested lialf-a-gallon of an excellent quality. Most or this he replanted last spring in a fifteen rod plat of ground, and now has eight bushels of coffee, or an average of eighty-live bushels per acre, ile is satisfied that the crop is a sure one in his locality, and thinks it can be grown on a large scale and at an excellent profit.
