THURSDAY, JANUARY 18. Boom the grave! road business with a great big capital Boom. •MMMVnMOTMaBMKWMMMHa It is now Senator Foraker. The Ohio legislature so named it yesterday . _——— Aiiend the board of trade neeting at the court homie Saturday evening. It is your duty iw a citizen to lend a helping hand. I. I’. Watts, of Winchester, republican candidate for congress in this district, was looking after his fences in Adams the first of the week. TuftHUY General Asa 8. Bushnell was inducted into the gover nor’s oflice at Oolumbus, Ohio, thereby retiring Governor McKinley to private life. The StudaUiker bank at Bluffton is receiving considerable fiee advertising over an expectation of handling $50,000 worth of the new issue of government bonds. The republican county central committee will meet in the oflice of Paul G. Hooper next Saturday. The object of the meeting is for the organization of the committee. P. A. Randall has a hankering to represent the twelfth district in congress, in view of which he announces his candidacy, subject to the approaching democratic convention. The democratic state committee meets for organization at Indianapolis today. Sterling A. Holt, of that city, will lie made chairman, Lincoln Dixon, of North Vernon, secretary, and John R. Wilson, treasurer. Wellh county democrats met in convention on the 4th and set the 18th, jnst two weeks for their primary election. This makes it short and sweet, but nevertheless there are eleven cand ; dates for sheriff, which fully demonstrates that they are fully alive over there. John F. LaFoli.ette of Portland. wants to represent this con- ] gressional district on the republican state committee, and to forward this movement had his “phiz’’ in last week’s Commercial, 1 John is a real clever sort of a fellow and ought to be in better business. Joseph T. Day has purchased the Dunkirk Observer, and will try the newspayer business in In diana again. He at one time man-. aged the Ridgeville News, but for six years or more he has been sue-; cessfully engaged in the business in Illinois. He is a success at the business and will make the Ob-1 server one of the leaders in this section of newspaperdom.

THE Jiwksoti league which had a meeting at Indianapolis Tuesday, indorsed Mayor Taggart for gov vrnor, or rather spoke compliment urillyofhim in this connection. Taggart as such it candidate, would revive political spirits very mater tally. _____ The Morgan syndicate has ls*en dissolved by mutual consent, leaving all the tneinbeni thereof fret* to take a hand in the public bond sale that is now so entensively advertised and approved. The only way to make anything succeed is to advertise it. Here's fruit for the reflective business man. W. Henky El< HII<<BN wants to represent Wells county in the next legislature, ami is a candidate for that nomination. Henry is a bright boy, one of the liest young lawyers at the Wells county bar, and is deserving of the honors sought. Here’s hoping that luck's wid ye. The treasurer of Grant county is several thousand dollars short in his accounts. Grant oflicials are all republican, and it will lie well for the Journal to note this criminating shartage, for had the unfortunate been a democrat, Evarts would have had to order some new wood type, in order to give the matter decent prominence. The completed mortgage statistics of the country have l>een pub lished by the census bureau, and the total amount of mortgage debt shown to have been inexistanceon January 1, 1890, was $2,209,148, 421 on acres and $3,910,531,554 on lots. In other words, the total private debt of the United States secured by real estate mortgage is over $6,000,000,000, or an average of about SIOO per capital for each person in the country. That is enough forall practical purposes. —Portland Commercial. The date of the primary election in this county has lieen changed from Saturday, February 29, to Friday, February 28th. This change was made inorder that the canvass of votes could be made on Saturday, otherwise the same would have had to go over until Monday. It was right to make the change, as the candidates on the ticket will be anxious to know s their fate, which ever way the wind blows, and won’t be anxious i to pass a day in doubt, as they would have been compelled to do had the primary been held on Sat-1 urday. The organization of a board of trade will be adopted and detter-1 mined upon next Saturday even- 1 ing at a public meeting held at the: court house. This is a matter in which every live citizen of Decatur is interested in, and one whieh should be given more than a passing notice. An organization of this kind can do many things that otherwise could not be consumated. If you have a grain of public enterprise concealed about your person, demonstrate it by attending this meeting, and assuring the successful organization of such a public benefactor.
TllE state central eommitteseem favorable to an early state conven itiou, which in turn will prove ml vantagemis to the nomination of 'Governor Matthews for the pn-si I deucy. Now is a very g<ssl time for democrats to recall the fact that the republican party did not dare to change the tax law that was pronounced infamous, iniquitous and outrageous. Among the banks already listed is IJ. Wilson* Co., Marion; D. A. 1 Hetcher & Co., Indianapolis: Irwin’s Bank,Columbus; State Bank, ; Goshen: People's Bank, Portland; Citizen’s Bank, Canton; Citizens Bank, Portland; Marion Bank, Marion; W. 11. P. McLallen * Co., Columbia; City State Bank, Jonesboro; Plymouth State Bank. The total amount of bonds these banks will handle is $196,000. The candidates who are g< ing to test their popularity before the people on February 28, are just now lieginning to come from under the covering, by publicly announcing themselves and othirwise booming their individual candidacies. Our candidate column to date contains the names of Noah Mangold and William Erwin, candidates for auditor, Jonas Neuen schwander for treasurer, Peter P. Ashbaucher and Joel Roe for sheriff, William E. Fulk for sur-l veyor, and J. H. Hobrock tor com missioner in the first district. The list isn’t complete, however, as dame rumor is playing with sev-1 eral names in connection with that j number of offices. In the list of possibilities is Michael McGriff ami M. V. B. Simcoke for auditor, Henry Blakey and Jeremiah Archbold for treasurer, and several others whom we momentarily for get. The usual number of candidates will be in the field, and a friendly campaign is predicted. All the candidates are genuine democrats, any of whom would make admirable oflicials.
