DEMOCRATIC PRESS POMJMffD WllUf. «)KM<MHCATia PHEW MJBI.MHtXO VO. (,EW 3. ELLINGHAM, EDITOR '''iiil'l" ——»■ | f 1.50 PER YEAR IB ADVAX'E. Futvrrtl at tin- PiHrtofftevnt DwjM ur. tndloim ■ -ud Mall MitttflP* THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 21. Altoei.d, governor of Illinois, j is quoted 'is raying that in* is out of politics. He’ll not lx* missed. Some of the democratic counselors favor New York for thv bolding of the next national demo cratic convention. The Indiaua congress non now •esetnbllng in Washington nil want on some important commit tee. They don’t ask much either. Major McKim.i:y’.h president ial stock isn't quoted at par nt present. Perhaps George B. Cox can materially prop them up. Who knows. The Atlanta exposition seems to l»e financially prospering, the second installment of bonds having already been paid. Nothing takes so well as a world’s fair. TilEnameofJ. P.O. Shanks of? Portland, is now on the list for the republican nomination for congress from this district. He is one of the old timers of his party, having been in congress in the years long «goThe funeral of Seymour Matthews took place at Clinton Sun-' day. The deceased was a bright young boy and tU<- only son ot Governor Matthe\ra. The officials at the state house all attended the funeral. The Hon. F. P. Whitely of Ohio, while at Indianapolis last week, spoke very approvingly of Governor Matthews for the democratic nominee for president in 1896. He further said that the Oh io delegation would support him. The man who votes for the best man in local politics and the liest principles in ational ones is the liest citizen.—Journal. That is to say that the man who votes the republican ticket, is the only real kind of a best citizen. Rats. Sixty thousand democrats in Kentucky failed to vote this year according to election returns. No wonder the state went wrong. In all the states where elections were held, a less vote was polled than in 1892. They must lie dug out of their holes next year. Gov. Matthews has granted pardons to James Rogers, a Jasper county farmer, who was serving a two years’ term for assault and , Charles Borden for shooting and I slightly injuring another farmer. It has developed since their respective trials, that neither one are guilty. Gov. Matthews has named Mayor Taggart, Dr. J. C. Thompson, William R. Holloway, Chas, i R. Williams of Indianapolis, Gen. Lew Wallace of Crawfordsville, Hon. S. P. Sheerin of Logansport, Arthur W. Brady of Muncie, as an executive committee of the Indiana battleship. It is true that the democratic! party will be in better fighting trim uext year than now. They have unloaded an immense amount of “party pertidity and party dishonor,” ami will be more united than before. If the democratic party, when elected in 1892, had not been the victim of a few traitors, waterloos would not be known to us now. The most frightful catastrophe that has ever occurred in the history of electric railways and high bridges, happened at Cleveland Saturday evening. One of the large combination cars plunged through the “draw” at the central viaduct and fell one hundred feet into the water below. Some twenty persons were drowned. Carelessness on the part of the motorman is given as sole cause of the fatality. It is now hinted that the Harrison managers desire a late convention, with aviewtlmt Matthews will be on the democratic ticket and this would greatly aid his nomination. It might be well for these same managers to study well the r< verse side of such a theory. If Matthews should not be on the ticket, and it is not probable that he will be, would not that fact be disastrious to his, Harrison’s nomination. We charge nothing for these pointers.

Senator Sherman nowsaysthat General Harrison is unpopular at i ome and abroad. The senator is evidently bound to air his mind while he is at it. Now Indianapolis is pulling hair oyer their city library’ and the many abuses registered against it. That’s the way it goes when people have the earth—never satisfied. The republican brethren are having a love feast at Indianapolis this week. We presume they are sizing up some methods by which they will cut some figure in the cam- I paign next year. The republican who allows the elections this year to be a criterian tor those next year, should be care ful about allowing their sanguinity to sour too high. The democrats will lie at home next year. And now one of Holmes’ attorneys is in hock, having been proven guilty of bribing a witness and paying therefor twenty dollars for certain testimony. Such is life when associated with “Jack the ripper.” This nation is represented abroad by five Indianians, namely. Samuel E. Morss, consul general, Paris; Luther Short, consul-gener-al, Constantinople; Peter Leiber, consul-general, Dusseldorf; Wm. H. Jacks, consul general, London, Ontario; Charles Denby, jun., secretary legation, Pekin, China. In no state in the union that held an election a week ago Tuesday did the prevailing party' poll as many votes as Grover Cleveland received in 1892. There is a democratic party hid out somewhere in the woods yet, and if we can get it to the polls with its fightingclothes on in 1896 Grover Cleveland’s successor in the white house will be a democrat.—Bedford Democrat. William C. Whitney, the brightest statesman of New York, is said to favor Cleveland for another nomination. This third term business is all bosh. We don’t speak officially, but. we have no hesitancy in saying that President Cleveland desires no third term. Beside that, he couldn’t be nominated if he did. There is better men in the democratic party than Grover ('leveland.
