We feel disposed to say that Mayor Taggart of Indianapolis, traitUi make an excellent candidate for governor. By consent of the various other candidates for the gubernatorial seat, we will secoutl his nomination. The circulated reports last week j that Editor McDonald at Ligioner had been shot, turns out to lie another correspondent fake. It’s too l»ad that some of these lying correspondents can’t get the realities of such a report. Thkke are 027,072 voters in Indiana, according to the enumeration of voters taken by the many towuship trustees, certified to by the county auditor, and sent in to the auditor of state, from which official this statement now comes. Out of this number 13,332 are colored. The assessment of poll tax shows but 405,573 or an average of 200,000 people who escape poll tax. The Indianapolis election Tuesday was decided'v democratic, for all of which we feel highly jubilant and will join the roosters on a good-sized crow. This election , was watched with interest by democrats and republicans alike, the state over. It is a sort of a foretaste of what’s coming, and if it continues to come in wagons as they did at Indianapolis, our cup will fail to hold all of the mitigated joy, such an event would bring. | However the democrats of Indianapolis deserve congratulation for 4heir vigorous campaign and its j results. We hope that they may j ever have such a gallant leader as, the Hon. Thomas Taggart, the next governor of Indiana. Ik tne death of Jesse Niblick, ; Decatur looses one of its long and ! time honored citizens. He has been constantly engaged in business in our city for forty-nineyears, a period of time that is difficult to calculate, when you consider it entirely devoted to bnsiness. He was always a hard working busi- — uess man; not one of the kind who sits by and allows his employees to do his business for him, but the kind that does more work than any one in his employ, and at the same time always thinking how to expand his business. Such men are few, so it is little wonder that every one should try to imitate him through life, and honor him at all times. Jesse Niblick is dead, but his handiwork will live as long as the world lives.

It is a forerunner of what’s coining next year. It is a note of warning to our republiian brethren that the ghoat is walking, and that they will tiiul no democrat* lurking in the traces. That the money panic just passed through was not of democratic crgin, but the natural result of a long period of protection to the classes, ami taxation to the masses. That the present resumpt-iou of business and prosperity is due to «h*moera tic tariff regulations, and not be cause the next congress will be con trolled by the reputdicans. All these things are significant, and sufficient to cause every democrat in the state to rejoice, so turn out the cocks ami let’s crow. Indianapolis politically is pretty evenly divided, and neither party has a snap at election time. Never before have t-he majorities ranged so high as they did Tues day in favor of the democrats. The past two years of republican rule has tieen a continual administration of jobbery, extravagance ami hypoeriey in general. The people demanded a business administration affairs, and knew they would get it from Mr. Taggart. His election was no surprise, but the emphatic majorities were unlooked for, and fully demonstrated the fact that a change they wanted badly. The democrats get fifteen out of twentyone counoilmen, so the ofiicialuess iof our eapitol city is decidedly democratic. We predict for Mayorelect Taggart a business and satisfactory administration. The lank wreckers case of the Coffins, which bsis l*een t>n trial at Indianapolis, is again ended. This ; time the jury declares Frank A. Coffin guilty, and Percival Coffin i not guilty.’ They were at the head of the Indianapolis Cabinet I Company and were charged with getting nearly #400,000 from the Indianapolis National Dank, with | the connivance of its president, Theodore I*. Haughey, who is now ! serving a six years sentence in prison. At a former trial both brothers were convicted, but the supreme court reversed the case. i The Indianapolis Sentinel did some mighty effective work in the recent city canifiaign, ami is deI I serving of congratulation for it. It i stood alone in the tight and in the ! consequence had much to contend with, but the glory comes later i when it sees what effect its paramount war had on Ben Harrison’s - party. ______________ Subscribe for the Press. In all nature there are no evils without remedies; as we deal with diseases so we should deal with ilellnquwucy. since we cannot separate either from heredity and parental Influences. As the standard of education la Increased the need of legislation Is diminished. It has been said that “one who Is l«ora with such congenital Incapacity that nothing can make a gentleman of him I* entitled, not to our wrath, but to our profoundest sympathy.” and I am In hearty accord with that expression. To punish for an offense for which the offender la not responsible, i* only degrading to the character of him who lull teta the punishment. To punish with |ienal servitude a poor unfortunate who was brought Into the world wlrbou' w * cestry have committed violations, that with all the physical and moral strength the Beneficent Creator bus given him. he cannot overcome. Is Just as big a blot on the municipal laws of the state or nation as It la upon the . character of the individual who Inflicts punishment under circumstances w**i» less authority. To send an unfortunate to prison and confine him to penal servitude Is to degrade him more, and after lie has served the allotted him by some court or jury, he Is doi based In his own estimation and ostracised from society as well. Our reformatory institutions are mere ■ farces, ostensibly youthful culprits are sent i to these institutions for discipline, but In reality more detriment is done to the i morals In a year than can lie overcome In the RKllntngltfo time. Obildlsh innocence and i the most abandoned march ddc by side. The i state commits a crime In nine cases out of ten when it attempts to reform by these ■ methods. Ilurlng the past five years nauw boys of different ages Bridewell, an Institution of Chicago, and I maintain that all the Instruction In Christendom will not overcome the 111 effects of such incarceration. Hut the child unborn Is the one who needs i the attention of reformers. I believe there should lie strict and rigid legislation regulati lug the question of fatherhood and motherhood. I believe the state, yea the nation.
