From Representative Kelley. IndianakkLls. January 14,1895. Editor Press:—Perhaps the readers of your valuable paper and my constituents would be interested in a brief summary of what the Indlasa legislature Is doing. so I will send you a few of the points scored up to | date. The republicans organized the house by ‘ electing Justus C. Adams of Marion county, speaker. Mr. Adams has so far manifested ■ the utmost fairness. He personally sought' some of the leading democrats of the house ! and told them, that while be could not give ' thviii chairmanships, yet he wanted to do i what was fair, and asked them to make out a ' list of what they desired, it is understood, that these appointments will be made by him j unless outside circumstances should conflict . and require same change to be made. The : committees have not yet been announced. I but probably will today. Monday. The house met in joint assembly with the senate Friday to hear the Governor’s message. The speaker is eminently satisfactory to the democrats in the house There were! several candidates for the speakership, some of which, arc no more fit to be speaker of the Indiana legislature titan Ben Harrison to be > president of the United Stales. One of the most notable things about this session of the i legislature is the number of hungry p’ace i hunters, of which there is quite an army, all claiming of course that they bad promises of i positions for the term. That some of them : are disappointed goes without saying, and now some of the boys that have been here for several days at their own expense waiting fora fat job, an- using language that would not be considered strictly morn! or polite in any Sunday school in the state. Another feature, plain to l>e seen, is the numberof republican polltleans from nearly every quarter of the state. Os course they are uot here to influence legislation in particular, only to tell the republican statesmen here what they must do. with a big M. A majority of the members of the fifty-ninth general assembly are young men. Quite a number are farmers. i»nd there are school teachers, lawyers, doctors and editors. And by the way. most of them are pretty fair men. Il Is not possible at this writ lug to say what will be done during the session. What plan the republicans have mapped out is not known, and it is doubtful if they can carry out what they have mapped out. for, it is known that they are divided on some of the most important measures. It is probable that they will undertake to modify the fee and salary, election and tax laws. and. perhaps, gerrymander the state forelection purposes. But how they will succeed is only a matter of conjecture. Time will tell. There is two contest cases for seats in the legislature; one senate, one in the house. That of the senate is Adam Foust vs. John W. Rinear, of Huntington and Wells counties. Mr, Rinear is the democrat who holds the certificate of election, and Foust is the republican contestant. In his contest proceedings Foust alleges that Rinear is not entitled to the seat, because he violated the election laws ih hiring teams to convey voters to the polls. H« further states that the majority of voting places, both in Wells and Huntington county, were under the control of .the democratic party, contrary to law. He alleges that in one precinct in Huntington county twenty paupers were voted by the superintendent of the poor farm, contrary to law; that the persons so voting were not entitled to vote at that precinct; that all of them voted the democratic ticket, which was contrary to law. etc. This is probably all moonshine. The case has been referred to the committee on elections, with instructions to report by February Ist. The other case is Miller vs. B<»w»ts. from the district composed of Dearborn, Ohio and Switzerland counties. Mr. Bowers is the democrat with the credentials and occupying the seat. Mr. Miller is his.opponent. Miller alleges some irregularities, but investigation lias not developed anything in Miller's favor. Both Rinear and Bowers were both no doubt fairly and honestly elected, and the opinion seems to be that they will hold their seats. But should they be unseated it will probably l>e some years before the republican will have a chance to contest another election for senator or representative in these counties. It is said there is no precedent for such proceedings, Will the republicans set one. is the question. Let us hope they will not. as we have not members to spare, but it is very hard to tell what a republican legislature will do. John T. Keldey.

Revival meeting arc now in progress at the Valley, under the direction of Rev. Johnson. Brandyberry’s will have a shooting match next Saturday. We wen* visited last week with large fall of snow, and consequently the boys have rigged up their sleds and sleighs, and are just agoing it. and the girls are glad of it. Veley was at Portland on business last Thursday. A number us our Rebekahs were attending lodge at Portland last Friday night. The ladies report a fine time. Will Godfrey is visiting ids home at Lima. Ohio. Sleigh riding is all the rage in Geneva just now. All we can hear is the sleigh bells jingle and that makes many a man wish himself single. C. O. Harper made another trip to Stone Station. Jacob Deitsch and little baby have been quite sick for several days with catarrhal fever. Jacob Shoemaker is on the sick list. Frank Ila vilaud spent last Sunday in Portland. with friends as well as his best girl. We learn that one of our good looking widowers will quite soon tie himself up to a Decatur young lady. Both are quite favorably known and public opinion decides the match as just all right. W. Wig Briggs made his usual weekly visit to Portland last Sunday, and taking the regularity of these visits into consideration things look kinder mysterious. Mr. and Mrs. Blackburn visited relatives in Fort Wayne tnis week.
