O. C. MCLAUGHLINS IN FLOOD. Former Decatur Newspeper Man Has Terrible Experience In Dayton. i O. C. McLaughlin, of Portland, forJmer city editor for the Decatur Journal, under the ownership of C- M Keu- ‘ ; yon, had a most harrowing experience in Dayton during the floods. The I Portland Sun says: I ’ O C. McL*ughlin, wife and little ’ daughter arrived in this city on an pearly morning train Monday, from Ridgeville, where they had spent Sunday while enroute here from Dayton, Ohio, where he has been employed as I court reporter on the Dayton Morning Journal. The McLaughlin famil/ were in the heart of the flooded district of Dayton last week, he being separated from his wife and child from early Tuesday morning until Thursday noon. However, Mrs. McLaughlin’s brother, Leo Jellison. who i is also in this city at this time, was with them, as was also Roy Walters, another Portland boy, “After returning home from his work at about 3 o’clock Tuesday morning. Mr. McLaughlin says he was awakened by the alarm sounded, warning citizens of Dayton of the danger from the rapidly rising waters. He with Mrs. McLaughlin and babe left their rooms in the Belleview apartments and joined others who were out sightseeing—watching the waters rise. Then they were not alarmed, but later, it was concluded that perhaps they had better prepare to take care of themselves in case they should be marooned at home by the flood and after returning home he returned up town to lay in a supply of provisions. One basket of groceries was secured and after taking this home he again returned to the business districts to secure coal oil, hav- , iug learned that the electric power was to be cut off. On this trip be failed to reach home again until the waters bad receded two days later. > "With his family in their apartment at the Belleview, Mr. McLaughlin I sought refuge in the court house, where, with probably thirty others he j made the best of surrounding circumstances. Food was snared by the refugees in the court house and they managed to exist on this. Those in the court house remained on the stairway until forced to climb higher and I then stayed on the second floor, exist- I ing on such provisions as they managed to snare from the flood waters and what was brought them by those doing relief work in that territory. “While they were only doing light | ’ housekeeping in Dayton, with most of their furniture yet in this city, all of their linens and clothing except what they managed to pack hurriedly in suit cases, have been lost in the flood, their loss also including their silverware and much bedding.
“Concerning the loss of life in Dayton, Mr. McLaughlin says reports sent out have greatly exaggerated the number. However, the property loss will ibe extremely great, the entire busii ness section being completely wrecked. The basement and lower flcor of the office in which he worked is acomplete wreck and he does not know at this time when operations may be resumed. However, at this time, he is seeking rest and recreation from the nerve-wrecking ordeal through which he haa just passed." IN ONE MINUTE CLOGGED NOSTRILS OPEN—COLDS AND CATARRH VANISH.
